Carmen De La Rosa has won reelection to City Council\u2019s District 10, which encompasses Northern Manhattan neighborhoods including Inwood and Washington Heights<\/p>\n
De La Rosa pulled in 87 percent of the vote against her Republican opponent, Louisa Flores, who got 10.4 percent of the vote. A Unity Party candidate, Francesca Castellanos, got 2.6 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n
The progressive De La Rosa, who immigrated to NYC from the Dominican Republic when she was young and grew up in Inwood, is part of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n
De La Rosa, who is chair of the City Council Labor Committee, has recently recieved attention for her advocacy on behalf of the Daily News Union<\/a>. She was the lead co-sponsor of the so-called \u201cToo Tough to Die\u201d resolution, which called on the Daily News\u2019 owner, Alden Global Capital, to negotiate in good faith. Remarkably, soon after the resolution passed, the Union and Alden reached a tentative contract deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n According to City & State, De La Rosa initially sought to mount a bid to become City Council Speaker\u2014a race that is heating up\u2014before endorsing Crystal Hudson, a progressive Brooklyn City Council Member, instead.
