{"id":342773,"date":"2026-09-10T12:14:27","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T12:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/342773\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T12:14:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T12:14:27","slug":"liev-schreibers-new-york-apartment-comes-with-one-surprising-country-quirk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/342773\/","title":{"rendered":"Liev Schreiber\u2019s New York apartment comes with one surprising country quirk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvaxuv2001w27qf8m0qfksg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Liev Schreiber has always been terrified of chickens \u2013 it\u2019s an anxiety that has plagued the \u201cRay Donovan\u201d and \u201cX-Men\u201d actor since his hippie parents moved the family to a commune in Canada when he was a child. \u201cThey look like dinosaurs,\u201d he told Architectural Digest in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/liev-schreiber-feathers-his-nest-in-noho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interview for the magazine\u2019s October issue<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvbzgcz00083b6u58fjweyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet, when Schreiber opens the doors to his home for AD\u2019s October issue, he seems pretty comfortable surrounded by them. Posing feet-up on a Diamond Chair by Harry Bertoia for his photoshoot, Schrieber actually coddles a hen on his lap. A few feet or so in front is his wife, former beauty queen Taylor Neisen, barefoot in a butter yellow Chlo\u00e9 dress, joyfully cradling another of their hens under her armpit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvbzgcz00093b6uj7jqd0qr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, Schreiber, who is set to star in the new Apple TV crime series \u201cNocturne,\u201d shares his downtown Manhattan home with Neisen, his three children and five hens: Grandma, Sizzurp, Fern, Pico, and Miu Miu.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvh8nfp00093b6r016ly8lq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The birds \u2014 which were Neisen\u2019s idea \u2014 are usually confined to the rooftop of the converted 19th-century industrial space, a surprising country quirk in the heart of the city designed by landscaping firm Brooklyn Grange. Neisen\u2019s own childhood, spent on a corn and soy farm in South Dakota, made carving out some nature essential. \u201cWe had sheep and pigs and chickens,\u201d she said. \u201cSo making a green space on the roof was really important to me.\u201d Among the many plants are wisteria and raspberry bushes. For the purposes of the magazine feature, Schreiber is breaking his one rule: \u201cno chickens in the house.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ad1026-schreiber-10.jpg\" alt=\"Neisen and Schreiber's home was designed by Ariel Ashe and Reinaldo Leandro.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvbzgcz000a3b6uh18ygf1q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To descend from the rooftop, a blackened-steel spiral staircase serves as an architectural centerpiece. But this dark, dramatic ambience does not dominate the d\u00e9cor \u2013 downstairs, the kitchen\u2019s stained rift white oak cabinets and stone-topped island are subtler design decisions, but it\u2019s still a room that took at least ten iterations to get right. Elsewhere, the couple\u2019s love of vintage manifests with walnut grass-seated chairs, designed by George Nakashima in the 1940s, in the dining room, a 1950s Teak Pierre Jeanneret table in the bedroom and a sectional snake-shaped de Sede sofa designed in 1970s in the living room.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvbzgcz000b3b6uyydk2cbl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schrieber first bought the place in 1998 as a bachelor pad, but started living there properly after his split with actor Naomi Watts in 2016. It has housed him through countless acting roles, but its location was especially useful when he was performing in Shakespeare plays at the nearby Public Theater.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtvbzgd0000c3b6uen7137z9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Through a series of renovations it\u2019s morphed from a one-bedroom apartment to a sophisticated NoHo triplex with a rooftop chicken coop, adjusting to major life milestones, such as the birth of Scherieber\u2019s third child, Hazel Bee. He and Ashe leaned into the space\u2019s historic texture, exposing brick walls and the charred wood beams in the family room, and stripping off drywall to reveal the original ceiling structure on the upper floor.
