{"id":342865,"date":"2026-09-10T14:25:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T14:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/342865\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T14:25:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T14:25:10","slug":"nyc-public-schools-implements-stricter-screen-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/342865\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Public Schools implements stricter screen time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAMAICA, Queens (PIX11) \u2014 Roughly 1 million NYC Public Schools students are heading back to the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>To combat overcrowding in schools, about 11 facilities across New York City have more than 4,600 new seats this year.<\/p>\n<p>Queens leads with more than 2,800 new seats, followed by Brooklyn with 1,600 and Manhattan with 275. Expansion projects also helped create those new seats.<\/p>\n<p>Another big change this year, the new AI ban.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a full pause on the use of artificial intelligence inside classrooms between 2-K and 8th grade.<\/p>\n<p>High school students will still learn about AI and use the technology, but with stronger limitations.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\tMore: Latest News from Around the Tri-State\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mayor said this is an important step to understand how AI works and use it effectively in the classroom without compromising learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As far as screen time, new guidance was announced this year.<\/p>\n<p>2-k to 2nd grade \u2013 no one-on-one screen time at all<\/p>\n<p>Grades 3 to 5 \u2013 up to 30 min a day<\/p>\n<p>Grades 6 to 8 \u2013 up to 45 min a day<\/p>\n<p>Grades 9 to 12 will be based on their course.<\/p>\n<p>The ban is expected to impact as many as 600,000 public school students in the 2026-2027 school year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"JAMAICA, Queens (PIX11) \u2014 Roughly 1 million NYC Public Schools students are heading back to the classroom.
