{"id":343157,"date":"2026-09-10T20:17:01","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T20:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/343157\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T20:17:01","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T20:17:01","slug":"9-11-victim-families-rally-in-manhattan-urging-mamdani-to-skip-ground-zero-memorial-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/343157\/","title":{"rendered":"9\/11 victim families rally in Manhattan urging Mamdani to skip Ground Zero memorial service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Mayor Zohran Mamdani took measures to remember and release records related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/nypd-high-rise-9-11-helicopter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">September 11<\/a>, survivor family members at two Downtown rallies asked the mayor not to attend the Ground Zero memorial and protested some of his political party\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>At least a half dozen family members of those killed on 9\/11 rallied at City Hall, asking Mamdani not to attend what they said is an inherently \u201cprivate\u201d 9\/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 400 others, including families of 9\/11 victims, interfaith leaders and civil rights activists rallied outside the New York City Democratic Socialists of America Manhattan offices, also asking the mayor not to attend and questioning some of the party\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>Mandami, who has taken numerous steps to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/john-j-harvey-fireboat-9-11-25th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the anniversary<\/a>, dismissed criticism and said he plans on attending.<\/p>\n<p>Protestors, meanwhile, focused on Twitter posts, statements and actions that they said were insensitive toward 9\/11 survivors, sympathetic to terrorists or statements, if they are not antisemitic, that could promote that sentiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137868714\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Photo-Sep-08-2026-7-07-03-PM.jpg\" alt=\"people outside at a rally holdings signs\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" title=\"9\/11 victim families rally in Manhattan urging Mamdani to skip Ground Zero memorial service 2\"  \/>At least a half dozen family members of those killed on 9\/11 rallied at City Hall, asking Mamdani not to attend what they said is an inherently \u201cprivate\u201d 9\/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero Friday.Photo by Amnon Shemi<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all went through a traumatic event. And we had politicians that were by our side helping us, inviting us into their homes, caring about us,\u201d Charles Wolf, whose wife Catherine was killed in the North Tower, said at City Hall. \u201cEven though there are going to be other politicians there, there are politicians that helped us, pushed beneficial laws through and literally held our hand during that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wolf believes some of Mamdani\u2019s views will become a focus of the event if he attends, taking away the focus from what occurred 25 years ago ranging from horror to heroism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a private ceremony. It is not a public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/law\/new-york-state-unified-court-system-9-11-tribute-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ceremony<\/a>,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cMayor Mamdani, please, do not come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cheri Sparacio, whose husband died in the attack at age 35, attended both rallies, saying she objects to some of the mayor\u2019s decisions, actions and statements, asking him not to attend.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, the election of a mayor of the Muslim faith due to votes of people of diverse religions shows how far New York City has come, but a surge in antisemitic attacks prompted some to point to that as one persistent problem.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani repeatedly has called the attack \u201chorrific\u201d and recently took actions related to 9\/11, including releasing records related to health, and declaring the date a New York City day of remembrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemembrance carries a responsibility to strengthen our city, protect New Yorkers and ensure that government is prepared to deliver for people no matter the circumstances,\u201d Mamdani said in a written statement. \u201c\u2018Never Forget\u2019 is not a slogan. It is a commitment that we must carry forward through action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137868716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Photo-Sep-08-2026-6-36-40-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" title=\"9\/11 victim families rally in Manhattan urging Mamdani to skip Ground Zero memorial service 3\"  \/>Photo by Amnon Shemi<\/p>\n<p>Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former Gov. Gov. George Pataki, both Republicans, also said he should not attend on Friday in what seemed like efforts to politicize the event as Madami seeks to remember victims and honor heroes and helpers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud to be the mayor of this city. I love this city. I love this country. What I want this week to be a focus on is on the families whose loved ones were stolen from them 25 years ago,\u201d Mamdani said recently. \u201cAnd the horrific act of terror of September 11 and the focus also on the first responders who did everything they could (for) this city. And to the people who came together to try help their fellow New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The protestors believe some of the mayor\u2019s and DSA positions help legitimize extremism, terrorism and antisemitism. Calls and emails to the DSA headquarters seeking comment were not returned.<\/p>\n<p>Protestors in what they dubbed a \u201cUnite Against Terror\u201d rally chanted \u201cUSA not DSA,\u201d at the corner of Essex Street and Straus Square in Manhattan, said September 11, 2001, was driven in part by Islamic extremism.<\/p>\n<p>They at the event, organized by EndJewHatred and the Lawfare Project, said the day after Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 on Oct. 7, 2023,\u00a0 the New York City DSA in a Times Square rally cited Palestinians\u2019 \u201cright to resist\u201d in what some saw as efforts to justify a terrorist attack.<\/p>\n<p>Pushback and Mamdani\u2019s response<\/p>\n<p>New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, and Democratic Socialists of America member and Rep.
