Dept. handling of teacher shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York state is facing a teacher shortage, and a new audit out by the state comptroller&#8217;s office says the New York State Education Department isn&#8217;t being diligent enough to fill those holes.<\/p>\n<p>The audit says New York is set to need 180,000 teachers over the next decade, and districts ranging from large urban areas to rural communities already see a need for instructors in high-impact subject areas.<\/p>\n<p>The audit boils down to a couple of issues.<\/p>\n<p>Of the $191 million in grants allocated to fight the shortage, the Education Department only gave out $155 million, and of that, only $118 million was spent.<\/p>\n<p>The audit found only 4% of districts applied for the Teachers for Tomorrow grant cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The comptroller&#8217;s office recommends stronger monitoring and communication from the education department about the grants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State Education Department needs to more effectively use the funds available to help address New York\u2019s shortage of teachers and improve program outcomes,\u201d state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said in a statement. \u201cThe Department must strengthen its oversight, communication and monitoring, and increase the use of the programs that support teacher recruitment, retention, certification and workforce diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DiNapoli\u2019s office says the state Education Department generally disagreed with the audit&#8217;s findings and recommendations, saying it monitored the grant programs and that it did not fully account for the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York state is facing a teacher shortage, and a new audit out by the state comptroller&#8217;s office&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":343184,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[203,109,116,67,9,11,10,49,51,50,12,112,87,380],"class_list":["post-343183","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-app-education","tag-app-local-state-politics","tag-app-ny-state-of-politics","tag-education","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-headlines","tag-new-york-news","tag-new-york-state","tag-new-york-state-headlines","tag-new-york-state-news","tag-news","tag-ny-state-of-politics","tag-politics","tag-spectrum-news-staff"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/343183","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=343183"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/343183\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/343184"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=343183"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=343183"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=343183"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
