{"id":343203,"date":"2026-09-10T21:04:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T21:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/343203\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T21:04:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T21:04:10","slug":"nyc-council-to-add-26-new-9-11-street-co-namings-across-five-boroughs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/343203\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Council to add 26 new 9\/11 street co-namings across five boroughs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City Council is rolling out 26 new 9\/11 street and public place co-namings and urging the state to adopt 9\/11 curriculum in schools as the city prepares to mark 25 years since the attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposed co-namings would stretch across all five boroughs, with a variety of new designations recalling the attacks, such as \u201cNever Forget Way\u201d in Howard Beach, Queens, \u201d \u201cEast Side 9\/11 Remembrance Way\u201d on the Upper East Side, and \u201c9\/11 Beacon Memorial Way\u201d in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The new names will also recognize nearby memorials, such as \u201cBrooklyn 9\/11 Wall of Remembrance Way\u201d in Coney Island and survivor organizations, such as \u201cTunnel to Towers 5K Run &amp; Walk 9\/11 Memorial Way\u201d in Red Hook.  <\/p>\n<p>A map compiled by the NYC Council shows the locations of 9\/11 street co-namings. New York City Council<\/p>\n<p>The Tunnel to Towers co-naming recognizes the annual 5K honoring FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in full gear to reach the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, where he was killed in the rescue effort. Lone Pine Press for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn will get the most street namings, while Manhattan\u2019s list includes street names recognizing employees of the Marsh &amp; McLennan company killed in the Twin Towers and FDNY units that lost members in the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>One particularly jarring proposed name \u2014 \u201cFresh Kills 9\/11 Recovery Heroes Way\u201d \u2014 refers to the Staten Island site where workers sifted Ground Zero debris for human remains and belongings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKills\u201d is from the Middle Dutch word kille, meaning a riverbed or water channel, according to the city\u2019s Freshkills Park history \u2014 not a reference to the recovery work itself.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin speaks during an announcement of funding for 9\/11 educational programming in New York City on Sept. 3, 2026.
