New York will pause Friday to mark 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, as families and friends of victims gather in Lower Manhattan to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed that day.<\/p>\n
The 25th anniversary ceremony at the National Sept. 11 Memorial will bring together victims\u2019 family members and other members of the 9\/11 community.<\/p>\n
Family members will read aloud the names of those killed in the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m., with the first moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.<\/p>\n
The ceremony is private and the Memorial plaza will not be open to the public during the event. The 9\/11 Memorial & Museum also will be closed to the public Friday. The ceremony will be streamed online.<\/a><\/p>\n Multiple moments of silence will be observed during the ceremony, marking the times the World Trade Center towers were struck and collapsed, the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n For the first time this year, there will also be a moment of silence held to honor people who have died from 9\/11-related illnesses<\/a> and injuries in the years since the attacks.<\/p>\n New York and national leaders, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Vice President JD Vance, are expected to attend the observance in Lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n President Donald Trump, who was in New York on Sept. 11, plans to attend the Pentagon\u2019s anniversary ceremony<\/a> Friday.<\/p>\n Nationwide, the anniversary also will be marked around New York with wreath-layings, flags, moments of silence, vigils and other memorial events.<\/p>\n New York is also marking the anniversary beyond the traditional ceremonies.<\/p>\n Mamdani has declared Sept. 11 the city’s first official Day of Remembrance and Service<\/a> and launched a citywide digital tribute featuring stories of New Yorkers who helped with rescue and recovery efforts after the attacks.<\/p>\n The 9\/11 Memorial & Museum is also marking the anniversary with a new exhibition, “In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9\/11-Inspired Service<\/a>,” which will open Saturday.<\/p>\n The day will end with the annual \u201cTribute in Light\u201d art installation, which sends twin blue beams of light up to four miles into the sky, representing the Twin Towers.<\/p>\n
