It now proclaimed that Glaser loved New York City \u201cmore than ever,\u201d with a bruise added to the red heart for emphasis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the same way that we feel more deeply toward a loved one who has been hurt, all of us suddenly realized how deeply we feel about this city,\u201d Glaser later <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/isbn_2901581152653\/page\/1\/mode\/1up?q=%22more+deeply+toward%22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> art director and journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/sva.edu\/faculty\/steven-heller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Heller<\/a>. \u201cA confident giant is hard to love; a vulnerable one is not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An American graphic designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/sign-of-the-times-bob-dylan-95420\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also known<\/a> for creating an iconic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/8108\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1966 illustration<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/the-real-story-behind-a-complete-unknown-and-bob-dylans-early-career-from-his-arrival-in-new-york-city-to-when-he-went-electric-180985672\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Dylan<\/a>, Glaser came up with his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/object\/i-heart-ny-more-ever%3Achndm_2009-27-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I \u2665 NY More Than Ever<\/a>\u201d variant shortly after the September 11, 2001, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/thirty-seven-smithsonian-artifacts-tell-story-911-from-flight-93-logbook-to-squeegee-handle-used-to-escape-from-world-trade-center-180978597\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terrorist attacks<\/a> on the United States. \u201cLike all of us, I felt the need to respond to this incomprehensible tragedy,\u201d he said to Heller. \u201cI woke up \u2026 with the words and image completely formed in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-523935822.jpg\" alt=\"A 2014 photo of Milton Glaser in his New York City studio\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>      A 2014 photo of Milton Glaser in his New York City studio<\/p>\n<p>      Neville Elder \/ Corbis via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/events\/national-museum-american-history-presents-september-11-25-years-later\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after 9\/11<\/a>, \u201cI\u00a0\u2665 NY More Than Ever\u201d serves as a poignant reminder of how New Yorkers came together in the aftermath of the destruction of the World Trade Center. Glaser \u201cwas compelled to reach out and offer a statement to the city\u2019s residents that, in spite of the tragedy, they still had each other,\u201d Dan Bates, studio manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonglaser.com\/the-studio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milton Glaser Inc.<\/a>, tells Smithsonian magazine. The updated logo \u201cwas a declaration that the people and the affection they have for the city, and one another, endures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glaser debuted the original \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcny.org\/story\/milton-glaser-and-i-heart-new-york\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I \u2665 NY<\/a>\u201d design in 1977, as part of an advertising campaign for New York State. Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.org\/governor\/hugh-leo-carey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hugh Leo Carey<\/a> had averted New York City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/the-night-new-york-saved-itself-from-bankruptcy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bankruptcy crisis<\/a>, but rising crime rates and a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/05\/07\/archives\/garbage-piling-up-in-building-strike-owners-and-tenants-demand-that.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">garbage strike<\/a> continued to cloud the public\u2019s view of the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>State officials \u201chad nothing to help [New York\u2019s] tourist program, no posters, no maps for gas stations, no bumper stickers for taxis and no money to make such things,\u201d advertising executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/11\/business\/mary-wells-lawrence-dead.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Wells Lawrence<\/a> wrote in her <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/biglifeinadverti00lawr\/page\/141\/mode\/1up?q=%22help+its+tourist%22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2002 memoir<\/a>. \u201cIt was love for New York that brought Milton to our offices with a batch of posters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glaser\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/31\/nyregion\/milton-glaser-still-hearts-new-york.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">initial proposal<\/a> sandwiched the phrase \u201cI Love New York\u201d inside two diamonds. But he soon came up with a different design: Writing on an envelope during a taxi ride in 1976, the artist scrawled \u201cI \u2665 NY\u201d on a single line in red crayon. (His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/128649\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concept sketch<\/a> is now housed in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art.) A revised version launched the following year, with \u201cI \u2665\u201d now stacked atop \u201cNY.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt becomes much more of a shape, much stronger visually, than if it were running horizontally,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/elupton.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ellen Lupton<\/a>, a curator emerita at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cooper Hewitt<\/a>, Smithsonian Design Museum. Glaser\u2019s font choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenewyorktype.com\/i-love-ny-american-typewriter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Typewriter<\/a>, also adds to the design\u2019s overall visual impact: \u201cThis whole logo would not be as nice if it were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/calendar\/exhibitions\/38\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helvetica<\/a>,\u201d Lupton tells Smithsonian.<\/p>\n<p>Glaser was seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2020-06-27\/appreciation-how-milton-glasers-i-p-10084-65039-p-ny-logo-taught-us-to-talk-in-emoji\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">under the impression<\/a> that the ad campaign would run for just two weeks. Instead, \u201cI \u2665 NY\u201d became \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/Branding_New_York\/BUySAgAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=%22the+most+talked+about+and+successful+tourism+program+in+the+nation%22&amp;pg=PA212&amp;printsec=frontcover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most talked-about<\/a> and successful tourism program in the nation.\u201d As Chris Lowery, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasedesigngroup.com\/people\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chase Design Group<\/a>, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brand-marketing\/how-the-i-heart-ny-logo-twice-transcended-marketing-and-endures-4-decades-after-its-debut\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adweek<\/a> in 2017, the logo emerged as \u201creally the world\u2019s first emoji. In a diverse, multicultural city like New York, anyone who saw it instantly knew what it meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"h4-style\">Need to know: Milton Glaser\u2019s legacy<\/p>\n<p>    &#13;<br \/>\n\tAccording to Lupton, Glaser is \u201cone of the most recognizable names in the design world,\u201d revered by graphic designers for helping to \u201cshift the center of [the industry] from Europe to New York.\u201d&#13;<br \/>\n\tOver a nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/2020\/06\/29\/milton-glaser-1929-2020\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seven-decade<\/a>\u00a0career,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonglaser.com\/the-work\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glaser<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sva.edu\/features\/the-essential-milton-glaser-works\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">designed<\/a>\u00a0whimsical, eye-catching album covers, book jackets, promotional posters, magazine covers, logos and more. He also co-founded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonglaser.com\/case-studies\/803\/new-york-magazine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York\u00a0magazine<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>New York State\u2019s Department of Economic Development holds the \u201cI \u2665 NY\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iloveny.com\/licensee-info\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trademark<\/a> and is zealous in its <a href=\"https:\/\/99percentinvisible.org\/episode\/episode-87-i-heart-ny-tm\/transcript\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pursuit of vendors<\/a> who use the design without license. As of 2011, official merchandise bearing the logo brought in an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/art\/art-features\/8303867\/Milton-Glaser-his-heart-was-in-the-right-place.html?ref=untappedcities.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$30 million<\/a> annually, and the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/milton-glaser-on-new-yorkers-for-better-or-worse-youre-here-and-doomed-to-be-here\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earned<\/a> more than $1 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muckrock.com\/news\/archives\/2013\/nov\/19\/new-york-cashes-i-ny-copyright\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">licensing fees<\/a> each year. None of this revenue went into Glaser\u2019s pocket during his lifetime, but he didn\u2019t seem to bear any resentment over the situation. \u201cThe truth is, I have enough money to live the life I want to live,\u201d he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/milton-glaser-on-new-yorkers-for-better-or-worse-youre-here-and-doomed-to-be-here\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Village Voice<\/a> in 2011. \u201cI don\u2019t think about how it would be if I had another couple million. I have no needs that are not being fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glaser did, however, run afoul of the state agency when sharing his \u201cI \u2665 NY More Than Ever\u201d design. Initially, the artist <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/isbn_2901581152653\/page\/179\/mode\/1up?q=%22sign+of+weakness%22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asserted<\/a> that \u201cthe state has no interest in using this variation of the logo, feeling that anything that acknowledges the 9\/11 event might be interpreted as a sign of weakness.\u201d Speaking with the Village Voice a decade later, Glaser said that the state \u201cthreatened to sue me [for] infringing on the copyright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lifelong New Yorker, Glaser was deeply affected by the attacks on his city. \u201cExcept for the period he studied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pixartprinting.co.uk\/blog\/milton-glaser-and-the-italian-connection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in Italy<\/a>, he was thoroughly a New York creature,\u201d illustrator and colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/mirkoilic.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mirko Ili\u0107<\/a> told <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2051146\/milton-glasers-sketches-for-i-love-ny-more-than-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quartz<\/a> in 2021. \u201cEverything that mattered to him was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/chsdm-chp7772.jpg\" alt=\"An\u00a0&quot;I \u2665 NY More Than Ever&quot; Milton Glaser poster\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>      An\u00a0&#8220;I \u2665 NY More Than Ever&#8221; Milton Glaser poster<\/p>\n<p>      Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum<\/p>\n<p>The designer also had a personal connection to the World Trade Center. He\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonglaser.com\/case-studies\/227\/windows-on-the-world\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">designed<\/a> much of the decor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/arts-culture\/food-cooking\/windows-on-the-world-world-trade-center-restaurant-3f77a59b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Windows on the World<\/a>, a restaurant complex that occupied the North Tower\u2019s 106th and 107th floors. Restaurateur Joe Baum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.911memorial.org\/connect\/blog\/remembering-milton-glaser-designer-windows-world-and-creator-i-ny-logo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hired Glaser<\/a> to create its iconic yellow-and-blue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonglaser.com\/the-work\/619\/windows-on-the-world-logo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">logo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/collections\/object\/nmah_1287615\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">menu<\/a> and dinnerware patterns. Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/collections\/object\/nmah_1029177\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/collections\/object\/nmah_1029178\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dishes<\/a> used at Windows are housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/collections\/object-groups\/september-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National September 11 Collection<\/a> at the Smithsonian\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Museum of American History<\/a>. They survived the World Trade Center\u2019s destruction because the restaurant\u2019s owner had brought them home for a private event.<\/p>\n<p>Glaser told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/daily-news-designer-creates-new-version\/205088497\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daily News<\/a> that he came up with \u201cI \u2665 NY More Than Ever\u201d while reflecting on \u201cthe most powerful thing you can say about us, a city.\u201d He added, \u201cThis blow has made us even stronger and more powerful in our passion for New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to publishing his updated logo in the Daily News, Glaser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonglaser.com\/store\/c:posters\/912\/i-love-ny-more-than-ever-2001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recruited<\/a> students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sva.edu\/features\/remembering-911-through-milton-glasers-i-love-new-york-more-than-ever-sva-poster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Visual Arts<\/a> to distribute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.911memorial.org\/connect\/blog\/story-behind-iconic-post-911-i-heart-new-york-more-ever-logo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poster copies<\/a> of the design. (One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/object\/i-heart-ny-more-ever%3Achndm_2009-27-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">such handout<\/a> is held in Cooper Hewitt\u2019s collections.) The posters, which were soon plastered on storefronts and in public places across the city, served a dual purpose, reminding New Yorkers of the strength of their community and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/2013\/09\/11\/a-heart-in-the-right-place\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">urging them<\/a> to donate to charities supporting those affected by the attacks. A small line of text at the bottom of the page read, \u201cBe generous. Your city needs you. This poster is not for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I Heart NY and Milton Glaser<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"wi5ywsNXvBg\" alt=\"I Heart NY and Milton Glaser\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Glaser also collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/wnyc.org\/story\/man-behind-original-i-ny-logo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WNYC<\/a> to raise funds to restore the radio station\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/11\/08\/arts\/wnyc-damaged-on-sept-11-sets-a-fund-raising-record.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">antenna<\/a>, which was damaged during the attacks.
