An explosion erupted on a barge on\u00a0Staten Island, killing one man and\u00a0igniting a blaze that injured two firefighters, officials said.<\/p>\n
The blast occurred on the barge docked on\u00a0Richmond Terrace\u00a0near\u00a0South Ave.\u00a0in\u00a0Mariners Harbor\u00a0around\u00a02:37 p.m., according to fire officials.<\/p>\n
The blast ignited a blaze on the barge, named\u00a0Casablanca, which spread to a shipping container on land that was packed with petroleum.<\/p>\n
More than 160\u00a0FDNY\u00a0personnel rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire.<\/p>\n
The body of an unidentified man killed in the explosion was found on the barge, cops said. Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries.<\/p>\n
An\u00a0FDNY\u00a0hazmat team remained on scene Thursday evening securing petroleum from the fire-damaged shipping container.<\/p>\n
The barge explosion follows\u00a0another blast at a\u00a0Mariner Harbor\u00a0dry dock<\/a>\u00a0located just a few blocks away on\u00a0May 22.<\/p>\n Firefighters responding to reports of two workers trapped in a confined space at that shipyard found a fire burning in the basement of a 150-foot-by-150-foot metal structure at the rear of the facility, according to the\u00a0FDNY.<\/p>\n About 50 minutes after that blaze broke out, the building was suddenly rocked by a thunderous explosion. The blast caused \u201cserious injuries to multiple\u00a0FDNY\u00a0members,\u201d FDNY Commissioner\u00a0Lillian Bonsignore\u00a0said at the time.<\/p>\n That blast left one man dead and 36 injured, including two firefighters with serious injuries.<\/p>\n \u00a92026 New York Daily News.
