The NYPD has named police dogs in honor of 9\/11 victims \u2014 and those who died in the years following the terrorist attacks from related illlnesses, according to a new video.<\/p>\n
One of the dogs in the video is Moira Ann, named for NYPD Officer Moira Smith<\/a>, who was killed helping guide people out of the south tower on 9\/11 and was the only female police officer to die in the attacks.<\/p>\n The NYPD released a new video featuring NYPD K-9s named after officers who died either on 9\/11 or of related illnesses. NYPD<\/p>\n The 1-year-old black Lab\u2019s <\/a>handler, Officer Serhan Cambudak, met the slain officer\u2019s husband, a retired police officer, and daughter for the first time at a Madison Square Garden event Thursday night. <\/p>\n The family asked him questions about the pooch named after their loved one.<\/p>\n K-9 Brophy was named for Officer Thomas Brophy, who died from a 9\/11-related illness. NYPD<\/p>\n \u201cThey were curious about the dog,\u201d Cambudak said. \u201cShe has a lot of energy. She\u2019s very curious. She\u2019s definitely eager to learn and very smart.\u201d<\/p>\n The explosives detection pup is seen in the new video wearing a pink collar and walking near the Unisphere <\/a>in Flushing Meadows\u2013Corona Park in Queens.<\/p>\n Cambudak, who joined the force in 2006, called it \u201ca very big honor\u201d to be Moira Ann\u2019s handler.<\/p>\n K-9 Ragner was named after Lt. William Wanser III, who died from cancer tied to Ground Zero. NYPD<\/p>\n The canine, who lives with him and his wife in Long Island, can work anywhere but is usually in Manhattan.<\/p>\n \u201cWe go to concerts, sporting events, any events where there are going to be a high influx of people,\u201d the officer said. \u201cSo it could be anywhere from Times Square to any stadium or sporting event.\u201d<\/p>\n
