{"id":345761,"date":"2026-09-13T19:36:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-13T19:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/345761\/"},"modified":"2026-09-13T19:36:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-13T19:36:09","slug":"yankee-stadium-cooling-tower-tests-positive-for-legionella-nyc-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/345761\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankee Stadium cooling tower tests positive for Legionella, NYC says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"xo3x8\">A cooling tower at Yankee Stadium is among 10 in the South Bronx that preliminarily tested positive for Legionella bacteria amid an outbreak of Legionnaires\u2019 disease that has <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/south-bronx-legionnaires-cluster-kills-1-sickens-5-nyc-says\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">killed one person<\/a> and sickened eight others, city health officials said Sunday.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"7f3hv\">The city Department of Health ordered all 10 cooling towers to be cleaned and disinfected by Monday, Sept. 14. One is at 1 E. 161st St., where the Yankees are playing the Mets on Sunday. A representative for the Yankees did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"7thim\">Health officials said it\u2019s not known whether any of the towers that tested positive played a role in the outbreak, and they said there is no additional risk from being inside the affected buildings, including Yankee Stadium. The initial PCR tests detect the presence of Legionella bacteria DNA but cannot determine whether the bacteria are alive or dead. The city is conducting additional testing to determine whether live bacteria were present.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"disov\">All 10 cooling towers are located in the 10451 and 10456 ZIP codes, which include parts of the Morrisania and Melrose neighborhoods. Anyone who lives, works or has visited the affected area since late August and develops flu-like symptoms should contact a health care provider immediately, health officials said.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2lno4\">The towers were tested as part of a health department investigation into a cluster of Legionnaires\u2019 disease cases. Nine people have been diagnosed, including one person who died. Three people remain hospitalized, four have been discharged and one did not require hospitalization, according to the city.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"23urn\">Legionnaires\u2019 disease is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People can develop the disease by breathing in mist containing live bacteria. Cooling towers, which serve buildings\u2019 air conditioning systems and release water mist into the air, have been identified as the source of previous community clusters.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8f64c\">Health officials said eight of the 10 cooling towers that tested positive were in compliance with a 31-day testing requirement that went into effect in May. The cooling towers at 820 Concourse Village West and 1265 Franklin Ave. did not provide the required testing information, officials said.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1ksrh\">The South Bronx cluster is the city\u2019s second major Legionnaires\u2019 outbreak this summer.
