For 20 years, thousands of dancers have taken over New York City streets each spring to make a simple point: dancing belongs here.<\/p>\n
If Footloose taught us anything, it’s that people don’t particularly like being told they can’t dance. New York City seems to agree. This year, that celebration came with a milestone beyond the parade route.<\/p>\n
In May 2026, the New York State Liquor Authority announced that businesses applying for on-premises liquor licenses would no longer have to disclose whether they planned to allow patron dancing. The agency also said dancing would no longer factor into its review of new applications.<\/p>\n
The change came the same month Dance Parade New York celebrated its 20th anniversary, bringing more than 10,000 dancers and more than 100 styles of dance through Manhattan before ending with DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park.<\/p>\n
For Rebecca Lynn, the creator and producer of Vinyl Nights, that range of cultures and styles is exactly what makes the event stand out.<\/p>\n
“Everyone is dancing together,” Lynn told me ahead of the parade. “It’s like the whole world comes together and dances together.”<\/p>\n
Lynn, a native New Yorker whose Vinyl Nights events celebrate the city’s disco, funk, soul, house, hip-hop and club history, called Dance Parade “the best parade in New York City” because of its focus on community and the number of cultures represented.<\/p>\n
That idea was echoed by Jeffrey Garcia, executive director of the NYC Office of Nightlife.<\/p>\n
“The beat goes on, you know, in all our communities, in all our cultures,” Garcia told Men’s Journal. He pointed to styles including voguing, salsa, merengue and bachata as examples of the forms of expression that shape both the parade and the city itself.<\/p>\n
“That’s what makes our city great and what makes the Dance Parade great,” he said.<\/p>\n
The celebration of dance comes against a much longer history of New York regulating it.<\/p>\n
New York City repealed its Cabaret Law licensing requirement in 2017, ending a system that had required certain establishments to obtain a separate license to allow dancing. The law dated back to 1926 and was criticized for decades by advocates who argued its enforcement disproportionately affected Black, Latino, LGBTQ+ and other nightlife communities.<\/p>\n
But repealing the Cabaret Law did not immediately eliminate every restriction surrounding dance.<\/p>\n
In 2024, New York City approved additional zoning changes that expanded where dancing and live entertainment could take place, replacing some longstanding restrictions with rules more focused on factors such as venue size and sound.<\/p>\n
Then came the state-level change this May.<\/p>\n
Under the previous liquor-license process, applicants were asked whether patron dancing would take place at their establishment. The State Liquor Authority determined that the question was no longer necessary and said applicants could leave it blank without affecting their applications.<\/p>\n
The change does not mean dancing is now completely unrestricted. Existing businesses whose liquor licenses contain stipulations prohibiting patron dancing may still need to seek a change to their method of operation, while local zoning and public-safety rules continue to apply.<\/p>\n
For Dance Parade New York, however, it represents another victory in a movement that has spent years pushing for fewer barriers around social dancing.<\/p>\n
And the people who participate in that culture see dance as something bigger than “just nightlife.”<\/p>\n
One performer who goes by Space Monkey NYC told me he had been dancing since he was 13, but embraced it much more fully later in life.<\/p>\n
“Just go out there. Just move your body,” he said when asked what he would tell men who are hesitant to dance. “It’s good for your soul, your body, health, mind.”<\/p>\n
Now Dance Parade is turning its attention from dancing to music.<\/p>\n
The organization’s new “Let the Music Play New York” campaign focuses on liquor-license stipulations and methods-of-operation restrictions that advocates say can limit DJs, live music and other entertainment.<\/p>\n
The group argues that government oversight should center on legitimate public-safety concerns, including occupancy, fire safety and noise, rather than determining what kinds of music or entertainment licensed venues can provide.<\/p>\n
It is an argument that fits the history Lynn and Garcia described: The Dance Parade is not merely about who can perform in the street for one Saturday in May. It is about the many communities that have used dance and music to find one another throughout New York’s history.<\/p>\n
After years spent fighting for the right to dance, advocates now want to make sure that the beat does indeed, go on.<\/p>\n
