Gov. Kathy Hochul<\/a> said on Monday that the state will begin mailing energy rebate checks of up to $200 to 8.2 million households starting Sept. 21, with payments continuing through December.<\/p>\n

The checks are part of the state\u2019s $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) program included in the fiscal year 2026-27 state budget. It is intended to provide financial relief to New Yorkers facing higher utility and energy costs<\/a>, the governor\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

Eligible New Yorkers do not need to apply or register for the rebate. The state\u2019s Department of Taxation and Finance will determine eligibility using information from 2024 NYS income tax returns. Checks will be automatically mailed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Washington Republicans continue to send the cost of everything from utility bills to gas and groceries soaring, I\u2019ll never stop working to address the rising cost of living for New Yorkers,\u201d Hochul said. \u201cToo many families are struggling with rising household energy bills and soaring gas prices at the pump \u2014 and that\u2019s why we\u2019re putting money directly back in New Yorkers\u2019 pockets by sending energy rebate checks to millions of families as part of our affordability agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joint tax filers with incomes below $150,000 will receive $200. Joint filers with incomes between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $150, while single filers with incomes below $150,000 will receive $100.<\/p>\n

To qualify, taxpayers must have filed a timely 2024 NYS resident income tax return, been a full-time New York resident, fallen within the applicable income limits and not been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer\u2019s return.<\/p>\n

The rebates are being distributed as advance credit checks rather than requiring residents to submit a separate application. The state said the checks will be mailed between September and December.<\/p>\n

\u201cPower checks are another meaningful way that Governor Hochul is trying to help people during challenging economic times,\u201d New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Commissioner Amanda Hiller said. \u201cAt the governor\u2019s direction, the Tax Department is working to get this much-needed relief to eligible families as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor\u2019s office explained that the POWER checks are part of a broader energy affordability package adopted in the state budget. The package also includes changes to the way utilities are regulated, including restrictions on passing certain lobbying, political and public-relations expenses to ratepayers. The budget also established requirements intended to encourage utilities to consider rate affordability when seeking increases.<\/p>\n

The Hochul administration said the state has provided more than $7.6 billion in direct utility bill relief since she took office in 2021, along with an additional $1.4 billion for residential weatherization, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The $1 billion POWER program is separate from the New York\u2019s 2025 inflation refund program, which also sent more than 8.2 million checks to taxpayers last year.\n<\/p>\n

New Yorkers who qualify for the POWER rebate do not need to take additional action to receive their checks. The state expects deliveries to continue through December.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gov.
