Dimone Fleming, a 26-year-old Bronx mother, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in connection with the 2022 deaths of her two young children at a family shelter. The Aug. 24 ruling comes after mental health evaluations concluded that Fleming was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings, according to reports from the New York Times<\/a>, ABC7 New York<\/a> and USA TODAY<\/a>.<\/p>\n Dimone Fleming found not guilty due to postpartum psychosis.<\/p>\n According to ABC7 New York, a judge ruled that Fleming was \u201cnot responsible due to mental disease or defect\u201d for the deaths of her two sons, 3-year-old Daishawn Fleming and 11-month-old Octavius Canada.<\/p>\n The children were discovered in a bathtub at the family\u2019s Bronx shelter apartment with multiple stab wounds. Police said Fleming displayed erratic behavior following the deaths. She was initially charged with first-degree murder.<\/p>\n Mental health evaluations conducted by experts for both the prosecution and defense later determined that Fleming was experiencing a state of psychosis when the children died. According to a 2024 press release from the Bronx District Attorney\u2019s Office, Fleming, then 23, was arraigned on charges including first-degree murder<\/a>, four counts of second-degree murder, and two counts of first-degree manslaughter. She appeared before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Brenda Rivera. Fleming was remanded into custody and was scheduled to return to court on August 7, 2024.<\/p>\n Investigators said the children\u2019s deaths occurred on Nov. 26, 2022, inside the apartment at 246 Echo Place.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Bronx District Attorney\u2019s Office said an examination by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that both children had extensive stab and slicing wounds around their necks and surrounding areas. Each child suffered four fatal wounds.<\/p>\n Authorities said the boys were found lifeless inside a bathtub filled with water and covered by a dark sheet. Fleming was allegedly the only caretaker with the children inside the apartment at the time of their deaths. Per CBS New York, the children\u2019s father later returned to the shelter to find the two young boys deceased in the bathtub.<\/p>\n What is Postpartum Psychosis?<\/p>\n According to the Cleveland Clinic, postpartum psychosis is an extremely rare but serious psychiatric emergency that can occur after childbirth, affecting approximately one to two women out of every 1,000 who give birth<\/a>. The condition can cause a person to lose touch with reality and may involve hallucinations, delusions, severe confusion, dramatic mood changes, and significant disruptions in sleep.<\/p>\n Dr. Veerle Bergink, director of the Mount Sinai Women\u2019s Health Center and an internationally recognized expert in postpartum mania and psychosis, explained the condition to ABC7 New York in an Aug. 28 report.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of things are happening in the body and brain, right after delivery, including [that] there is a major change in hormones,\u201d Bergink said. \u201cThere\u2019s a free fall in hormones after delivery, and we think that is partly the trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the insanity ruling, Fleming is not being released from custody. A new psychiatric evaluation has been ordered to determine whether she could still pose a danger to others.<\/p>\n She is expected to return to court on Sept. 18.<\/p>\n
