Entry-level tech jobs have plummeted by nearly 50% in the Big Apple in recent years \u2014 and the situation isn\u2019t much better for everything from business to entertainment and media, according to a dismal new study.<\/p>\n

Postings in entry-level jobs in the computer and mathematical sector in New York City dropped 49% between 2022 and 2025, the most drastic decline in any occupational area, showed a report from the Center for an Urban Future<\/a>, a New York-based think tank.<\/p>\n

Entry-level office and administrative-support job postings also fell by 36%, as did similar roles in business and financial operations, the report said.<\/p>\n

In addition, the arts, design, entertainment, sports and media fields saw a sharp decline of 34% in entry-level postings since 2022, according to the study.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI may be starting to break the bottom rung of the career ladder, making it much harder for young people to enter the workforce,\u201d city Comptroller Mark Levine warned in a post on X<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time ever there are now more new computer science grads than entry-level tech jobs in NYC. Today there are roughly 1.6 new grads for every opening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the handful of sectors that saw an increase in entry-level job postings, healthcare practitioners and technical experienced the largest jump, with 21% more postings since 2022, the researchers said.<\/p>\n

The legal sector meanwhile racked up an 8% rise in entry-level posts, while community and social services, protective services and life, physical and social-science fields all saw a 7% increase in their entry-level postings.<\/p>\n

Levine said the figures should serve as a warning to young people.<\/p>\n

\u201cPostings for entry-level tech jobs in NYC have fallen 49% since 2022, even as overall tech employment has remained relatively stable,\u201d he wrote in the post. \u201cThis pattern is showing up in other AI-exposed professions as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t the first time Levine has cautioned about the possible effects of AI<\/a> on jobs in New York.<\/p>\n

In May, he warned that the city was \u201csleepwalking into the age of AI,\u201d which he said could cost 300,000 Big Apple jobs and $14 billion in tax revenue, in a report<\/a>\u00a0using data from Moody\u2019s Analytics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no city in America \u2014 and perhaps none on earth \u2014 more exposed to both the promise and peril of artificial intelligence than New York City,\u201d read the report.<\/p>\n

He added that in the most likely scenario, AI could create moderate job and economic growth, with 52,000 new private-sector jobs per year between now and 2030.<\/p>\n
