A loaded gun was recovered at Curtis High School on Monday morning on Staten Island.<\/p>\n
Police say an 18-year-old student was fighting with another student.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the students were slamming each other into walls.<\/p>\n
School safety agents broke it up and discovered the firearm, with bullets in the cartridge, in the 18-year-old’s backpack.<\/p>\n
The student was taken into custody and charges are expected.<\/p>\n
“Weapons have no place in our schools or our city. The incident was quickly and safely addressed by our School Safety Agents, and no students or staff were injured,” a spokesperson with the education department said. “The gun was safely recovered, after a search was conducted of the student’s bookbag. NYPD was called immediately upon discovery of the firearm.”<\/p>\n
Parents that spoke with Eyewitness News said they were glad that no one was hurt, but alarmed that there was a loaded gun in a backpack.<\/p>\n
“I think there are some safety precautions around but I think we can do better… it’s more than the police, parents could play a big role,” said parent Spirit Maroon. “We check our children’s backpacks a lot and see what’s going on with them so you can have as much security as you want, but sometimes you really just need the parental guidance.”<\/p>\n
