Brooklyn Heights is known for its genteel old architecture, but when 16 Sidney Place sold to <\/a>Hollywood producer Jason Blum and his wife, screenwriter Lauren Schuker Blum, in 2019, the turn-of-the-century townhouse had a stark, modern style more suited to a midtown penthouse. There was an open, glass-and-steel staircase reminiscent of the Apple store, cement floors, and gas fireplaces set flush into the walls. The kitchen was a nearly reflective white. It was a look but apparently not one the buyers loved, as they decided to undertake a full renovation. (They weren\u2019t the only ones to find the super-sleek style off-putting; the house took two years to sell<\/a> and had several price cuts.) Now the couple will soon see if their own renovation is more immediately appealing: The townhouse just hit the market, asking $14.95 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The space looks quite a bit different now: There\u2019s a lot more color, molding, and pattern, creating what listing broker James Lee Wall, of Leslie Garfield, describes as a kind of \u201cWest Coast warmth.\u201d The renovation, done by L.A.-based design firm Studio Shamshiri<\/a>, involved enclosing the staircase and softening the flooring (along with everything else). There\u2019s wall-to-wall carpeting in many of the rooms and in the primary suite, leather floors. \u201cIt feels good underfoot,\u201d says Wall. \u201cIt\u2019s very soft and unusual.\u201d The home has other unusual features as well, like a custom triple bunk bed tucked under a skylight that\u2019s cut to the angle of the slanted ceiling. While the home\u2019s 6,600 square feet would seem to make such space-saving measures unnecessary \u2014 there are five bedrooms and 4.5 baths \u2014 it\u2019s nice to think that the Blums\u2019 three kids like to bunk together. The house also has an elevator, a gym, a garden, and a landscaped terrace.<\/p>\n

Wall says the sellers mostly live on the West Coast and also have a house in Connecticut; they decided they didn\u2019t need a New York City residence as well. Blum, the CEO of Blumhouse Productions, is most well known for horror movies like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Get Out. The house, which is 22 feet wide, sold to the Blums for $9.8 million in 2019, according to the New York Post<\/a>. But prices have gone up since the pandemic and renovated houses of roughly equivalent size have traded at the new asking price: 307 Hicks, a 6,000-square-foot home with a new, though less bespoke, renovation, sold for $14.95 million in February. Wall says there\u2019s a limited number of renovated townhouses on the market in Brooklyn Heights right now: 39 Willow<\/a>, done in a more traditional style, is asking $12.75 million. And 175 Clinton<\/a> is trying to get $17.95 million (it\u2019s somewhat bigger and wider, at 25 feet wide, but the location, over by the Key Food and Atlantic Avenue, isn\u2019t as charming). Sidney Place, a block-long street in the historic district, is also where Glossier founder Emily Weiss bought a $22 million townhouse<\/a> a few years ago.<\/p>\n
