Manhattan Regional Airport\u2019s Taxiway Alpha is set to undergo replacement construction next year. The pavement is 20 years old or older, which the FAA says is the useful-life standard.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Taxiway Alpha is the primary parallel taxiway at the airport, at roughly 7,400 feet long and 50 feet wide, and that\u2019s why Airport Director Brandon Keazer said construction will be done in five phases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of my items that I worked with the [design] consultant\u202fright off the get-go is that we wanted to phase\u202fthis construction in a way that it does not impact\u202fcommercial operations, private operations,\u202for even public operations at the airport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reason for those phases is to allow aircraft\u202fto always have access from any of our four ramps\u202fto our primary runway.\u2019\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
While there will be upgrades, there won\u2019t be any new features to the taxiway, Keazer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis taxiway is just going back\u202fto the same dimensions that are existing. It [the taxiway] will be built to new standards, [though]. One of the upgrades that will come from it\u202fis that our taxiway lights will be moved\u202fto LEDs with this project.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said the airport was \u2018lucky\u2019 to get two FAA grants totaling nearly $15 million. That will cover about 95% of the cost, with $800,000, or about 5%, locally funded.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Keazer said that\u2019s a deal for Manhattan taxpayers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSo [it\u2019s] a $16 million, roughly, project\u202fthat the local city of Manhattan\u202fonly has to pay $800,000 for.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
