{"id":346836,"date":"2026-09-14T23:42:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T23:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/346836\/"},"modified":"2026-09-14T23:42:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T23:42:15","slug":"nws-working-to-update-lake-america-naming-conventions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/346836\/","title":{"rendered":"NWS working to update &#8216;Lake America&#8217; naming conventions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Weather Service says it is working to implement the Lake Ontario\/Lake America name change.<\/p>\n<p>The organization says work is underway to update naming conventions for online maps, weather products, websites and other materials.<\/p>\n<p>They say the updates should not disrupt any operations.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last month, President Donald Trump signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/us\/snplus\/politics\/2026\/08\/27\/trump-signs-order-renaming-lake-ontario-as--lake-america--in-the-u-s-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">executive order<\/a> stating the United States will now recognize Lake Ontario as &#8220;Lake America.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was done during the ongoing tense tariff battle between the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The executive order can not change how other countries name the body of water.<\/p>\n<p>The move came with mixed reactions, especially among those in the community, as the name &#8220;Ontario&#8221; is an Indigenous word pre-dating European colonization.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The National Weather Service says it is working to implement the Lake Ontario\/Lake America name change.
