School safety is already facing an early test after three serious incidents in three school days.<\/p>\n
At Taft High School in the Bronx, police say a 17-year-old was attacked outside Monday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the biggest issues that we\u2019ve been dealing with is youth violence and gun violence, and it has not improved,\u201d Mona Davids, founder of NYC School Safety Coalition, said.<\/p>\n
Davids said the timing itself is troubling.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not the best way to start the school year,\u201d Davids said.<\/p>\n
The teenager is expected to survive. Police say his attackers got away.<\/p>\n
Students say the school was put on hold, but some only learned why from each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey didn\u2019t communicate it to us, but word spreads around fast. So, we ended up hearing it, but we didn\u2019t hear it from the teachers,\u201d one Taft High School told NY1.<\/p>\n
Then Monday brought more concern. Police say students in Queens and on Staten Island were each found with loaded guns in their backpacks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is definitely an outlier. Usually, we\u2019ll encounter this the first week of October, second week of October,\u201d Davids said.<\/p>\n
The warning signs began even earlier.<\/p>\n
On Sept. 4, school staff in Sheepshead Bay detected another loaded gun in a teen\u2019s backpack as he went through a scanner.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do need more scanning in schools. We do need more school safety agents to do the safety scanning,\u201d Davids said.<\/p>\n
Back at Taft, concern has not erased every student’s sense of safety.
