The future of Social Distortion seemed dubious in recent years. Formed in 1978 in Fullerton, California, the band was one of the pioneering bands of the original Southern California punk rock movement out of Orange County. Despite numerous lineup changes, the band kept a fairly consistent touring schedule, but had not recorded new music since 2011. For more than a decade, tour after tour, the punkabilly band performed the same old songs to aging audiences.<\/p>\n
In 2023, the live performances halted temporarily when Mike Ness, the band\u2019s leader and sole remaining original member, revealed that he was receiving rigorous treatment for stage 1 tonsil cancer. The vocalist\/guitarist underwent surgery, leaving him with feeding tubes and an inability to swallow, speak, or sing normally. Subsequently recovering at his farm outside Los Angeles, Ness endured radiation therapy and mild chemotherapy infusions. After a year of treatment and rehabilitation\u2014during which he had to relearn how to eat and rebuild his weakened vocal cords\u2014Ness successfully entered remission.<\/p>\n
Returning to the recording studio with new vigor, Social Distortion finally released its eighth studio album,\u00a0Born to Kill, on May 8, 2026. It is the band\u2019s first studio album in 15 years, following\u00a0Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes\u00a0in 2011. A nationwide concert tour to promote the new album brought the band to the Brooklyn Paramount on September 11 and 12.<\/p>\n
The Brooklyn Paramount concert was a punk rock showcase. The Chats, formed in 2016 in Australia, opened the concert with a raucous set. Descendents, contemporaries of Social Distortion, having formed in California in 1978, also performed. Perhaps thanks to a classic demographic, Descendents seemed to have sold as many t-shirts as Social Distortion, at least on night one of the bands\u2019 two-night residency.<\/p>\n
Social Distortion\u2019s current lineup, intact since 2010, is the band\u2019s longest-lasting lineup. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Mike Ness, guitarist Jonny Wickersham, bassist Brent Harding, and drummer David Hidalgo Jr. While not an official member, keyboardist David Kalish supported. Kalish has been at every Social Distortion concert since 2011.<\/p>\n
Despite the recent medical turmoil of recent times and the extended hiatus of product, Social Distortion proved that, now nearly 50 years in existence, the band is maturing fruitfully. At Brooklyn Paramount, from the first moment to the last, the musicians were solid, rip-roaring into a high-energy mix of six newer songs and 11 older ones. Every track was loud, fast, and dense in intensity.<\/p>\n
\u201cBorn to Kill,\u201d the title track of the most recent album, started the set as a survival anthem, lyrically outlining the obstacles that failed to put an end to the band. The power-packed words were a manifesto of the band\u2019s core rebellious spirit and resilience. Taking his rock-star stance with feet spread apart at the microphone stand while strumming passionately on his guitar, Ness spat the lyrics forcefully. The music was hard, melodic punk rock, and the message was deeply personal.<\/p>\n
The second song was an old staple, Social Distortion\u2019s octane-fueled version of a song made classic by Johnny Cash, \u201cRing of Fire.\u201d Much of the audience consisted of old-time fans who chanted along to the choruses of vintage songs including \u201cMommy\u2019s Little Monster,\u201d \u201cBall and Chain,\u201d and \u201cStory of My Life.\u201d The newer songs were received positively as well.<\/p>\n
The Brooklyn Paramount performance was tight and smoothly streamlined, yet loaded with gritty vocals, explosive guitar leads and riffs, and a pile-driving percussion. The music was firmly entrenched in alternative rock, with undercurrents of cowpunk and roots rock. In the end, it was all rock and roll, yet with an adrenalin-pumping potency that generated substantial moshpits and crowd-surfing. That was impressive for a bunch of old timers whose renewed vitality refuses to deliver a tired set of memories.<\/p>\n
