New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has created an army of social-media influencers to help boost his administration, a recent expos\u00e9<\/a> in the Columbia Journalism Review reveals. But while the mayor\u2019s unorthodox media strategy has gotten scrutiny, not enough attention has been paid to the influencers themselves and their views.<\/p>\n

Some in the mayor\u2019s coterie are relatively innocuous. But others celebrate<\/a> the assassination of Charlie Kirk, claim<\/a> America runs \u201cmass concentration camps,\u201d and make apologies<\/a> for terrorist attacks targeting synagogues.<\/p>\n

These influencers can hardly be said to represent New Yorkers. Hundreds of posts from those identified as belonging to the group chat of the Mamdani administration media team have been devoted to police and prison abolition, dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and lambasting Israel. The content belies the mayor\u2019s polished image as a moderate and offers more<\/a> evidence<\/a> that his social and professional circles are more radical than he lets on.<\/p>\n

Mamdani has embraced influencer communications since taking office in January. \u201cWe need to speak to New Yorkers through every single medium that they see themselves and see the world around them, and all of you are such critical parts of that,\u201d he said at an influencer-only summit<\/a> hosted during his first week in office.<\/p>\n

Joining Mamdani\u2019s influencer brigade is easy, the CJR reported. After filling out an intake form, influencers receive \u201cdaily updates, talking points, and clips\u201d through the \u201cNYC Creators Announcements\u201d group chat on the encrypted-messaging platform Signal. The initiative is led by Emilia Rowland, who serves as the mayor\u2019s director of New Media and Cultural Communications.<\/p>\n

Until two weeks ago, posts on that chat were set<\/a> to auto-delete, in apparent violation of state record-keeping rules. Pro-Mamdani posters have found themselves scoring interviews with the mayor and, more significantly, positioning themselves to secure paid sponsorships<\/a> promoting the work of government agencies.<\/p>\n

In a statement to City Journal, Rowland said that \u201cthe Mayor\u2019s office has never paid a content creator or influencer, full stop.\u201d She added that \u201cWe engage broadly and in good faith, including with people who may disagree with the administration or have made comments the administration disagrees with\u2014just as we allow outlets with a variety of partisan slants access to cover the mayor.\u201d<\/p>\n

City Hall has not published<\/a> a complete list of the influencers included in the Signal chat. But my analysis of the 33 who could be identified found 18 on the Left or far Left, with an additional 15 posting primarily nonpolitical and occasionally political content.<\/p>\n

For some of the influencers welcomed into the group chat, radical rhetoric is common. Framing<\/a> the Israel\u2013Hamas war as a \u201cgenocide,\u201d presenting<\/a> the police as racial oppressors, and suggesting<\/a> that ICE is a \u201ctool of fascism\u201d are just some of the themes shared between members of the group chat and the Mamdani administration<\/a>. Prominent far-left figures include Christina Brown. Brown, who goes by @missxtinab<\/a> on Instagram, celebrated<\/a> the assassination of Charlie Kirk (\u201cviolence was an answer\u201d), suggested<\/a> that ICE agents should be poisoned, and told<\/a> her 282,000 followers, \u201cI don\u2019t love this country. I hate it so much. I want to see it fall.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

She has described<\/a> Christianity as a \u201creligion of white supremacy\u201d whose pastors are \u201cCOVERED in the blood of enslaved people.\u201d Brown does not mince words, for example, in denying<\/a> that the phrase \u201cglobalize the intifada\u201d is anti-Semitic. And she\u2019s similarly blunt when she seems to endorse<\/a> violence: \u201cViolence wasn\u2019t the answer . . . what do you mean? Violence was the equation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Megan Kilnk, who co-runs @prettyinformedgirls<\/a>, told her 223,000 followers, \u201cAmerica has mass concentration camps<\/a>\u201d and \u201cthere is no reforming a f***ing Gestapo<\/a>,\u201d referring to ICE.<\/p>\n

Cassie Willson, who has posted several videos<\/a> with the mayor, exemplified the worldview of many of these influencers in a video<\/a> she made in February: \u201cFree Palestine, fuck Donald Trump . . . billionaires shouldn\u2019t exist, fuck fascism . . . no war but class war.\u201d Many extreme viewpoints are intentionally disguised as comedy to blur the lines. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to unalive\u201d\u2014that is, kill\u2014\u201cyour girlfriend\u201d for working for ICE, a character says in one satirical video<\/a> that Willson made in collaboration with Prance (a.k.a. @bocxtop), another<\/a> of Mamdani\u2019s influencers.<\/p>\n

An earlier post by Prance, from an influencer conference the mayor hosted during his campaign, highlights the unseriousness of such coverage<\/a>: \u201cIn your time as mayor, are you planning to provide bisexual girlfriends to everyone in New York City?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Matt Bernstein is a self-described<\/a> \u201cqueer jew with long nails\u201d and another of Mamdani\u2019s influencers<\/a>. Though he has not publicly disclosed his membership in the chat, Bernstein was granted interviews with the mayor on multiple<\/a> occasions. When he is not posting about the need to be \u201cradically pro-transgender<\/a>,\u201d he is making videos like this one<\/a>, where he says that \u201cIsrael is the only safe space for queer people in the Middle East . . . because they bomb all the other ones.\u201d Bernstein, who has more than 2.4 million followers<\/a> on Instagram, blocked New York traffic \u201cin protest of our senators continuing to fund Israel\u2019s genocide\u201d and explained the Hezbollah-inspired attack<\/a> on a Michigan synagogue by saying<\/a> that \u201cviolence begets violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Online influencers play an increasingly important role in American politics. Pew Research reported<\/a> that 38 percent of 18\u201334-year-olds, and 21 percent overall, regularly get news from these sources, which they often see as more authentic. Political and public-relations campaigns have responded by increasing their use of influencers, sometimes disclosing these relationships but often not.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so widespread,\u201d said Kaitlyn Hennessy, a content creator using her own Instagram<\/a> account to underscore the prevalence of undisclosed paid political content. Hennessy previously revealed<\/a> that California billionaire Tom Steyer had spent close to $1 million on influencers and related services in his California gubernatorial campaign.<\/p>\n

Candidates often hire media consulting firms\u2014like Fight Agency, which was retained<\/a> by Mamdani\u2014who in turn identify and contract with influencers. The content turned out by these influencers ranges from positive coverage of candidates to public ambushes of their opponents. \u201cSome of this stuff where you\u2019re seeing people get ambushed [on Instagram] is paid . . . And the people who are doing it, you don\u2019t even know if they actually care,\u201d Hennessy told City Journal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere it gets murky,\u201d she said, is that influencers will claim, \u201c\u2018we were only paid for certain posts.\u2019 But you weren\u2019t going to be able to make anti-Tom Steyer posts, then get paid [after that].\u201d Influencers whose messaging diverges from that of a candidate or politician can see future opportunities for sponsorship dry up. Hennessy said that her membership in Creator Congress<\/a>, a progressive influencer network, was terminated in August. She was told in an email, which I reviewed, that this was in part because of her \u201cdefense of pro-Israel candidate [Jack Schlossberg],\u201d after she pointed out<\/a> the documented<\/a> use of paid content by his opponent in the NY\u201312 primary, Alex Bores.<\/p>\n

The Mamdani administration has already admitted that the use of auto-deleting messages on the Signal chat, reported<\/a> by the New York Times, violated a New York State law requiring the preservation of official records. The city council has scheduled<\/a> a September 22 oversight meeting on the matter, during which a council member will introduce legislation. A framework outlining clear criteria for the inclusion (and exclusion) of individuals from privileged communications will go a long way toward ensuring that media\u2014new and old\u2014are not excluded simply for asking unwanted questions about trade-offs and implementation.<\/p>\n

Social-media influencers are likely here to stay in American politics. Both the Mamdani administration and New York City will be better off if we can, through both policy and law, more clearly define their roles.<\/p>\n
