Two 24-year-old friends, including an Indian-origin woman, were killed after they were hit by a New York City subway train in lower Manhattan on Sunday, according to preliminary information from police and transit officials cited by the New York Times.<\/p>\n
The victims were identified as 24-year-old Malaika Chitre of New Jersey and Navam Kaul, also 24. Both graduated from Rutgers University in 2024 and had recently begun their professional careers. Chitre worked as an operations specialist at a pharmaceutical company, while Kaul was employed as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg.<\/p>\n
The incident took place at around 3:15 am near the Spring Street and Canal Street subway station, officials said.<\/p>\n
Investigators reviewing surveillance footage found that Chitre and Kaul were sitting on the tracks of a southbound No. 4 train line as a subway approached.<\/p>\n
The train operator told supervisors that she saw the two people on the tracks and immediately applied the emergency brakes. However, she was unable to stop the train before it reached them.<\/p>\n
Emergency responders arrived at the scene soon afterwards and pronounced both victims dead.<\/p>\n
Around 100 passengers were aboard the train at the time. They were safely evacuated following the incident.<\/p>\n

The circumstances that led the two friends onto the tracks remain under investigation.<\/p>\n
Detectives are examining whether one of them may have accidentally fallen onto the tracks and whether the other then went down or attempted to help.<\/p>\n
Investigators are also looking into whether alcohol or another form of impairment could have played a role in the incident and affected their awareness of the danger.<\/p>\n
Police have not recovered any suicide notes.
