New York is ending its longstanding requirement that high school students pass a prescribed set of Regents exams to graduate, officials announced Monday.<\/p>\n

The state Board of Regents authorized the New York State Education Department to move forward with changes that will create a single New York State high school diploma and eliminate separate diploma assessment requirements.<\/p>\n

Beginning with the Class of 2028, students will no longer be required to pass a specific set of Regents exams to earn a diploma.<\/p>\n

However, the Regents exams themselves are not going away.<\/p>\n

Instead, the state Education Department said the exams will remain in use as one of several ways students can demonstrate academic achievement.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery student in New York deserves access to rich, high quality learning experiences and meaningful opportunities to demonstrate what they know and can do,”\u201d Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young Jr. said in a statement. \u201cAdvancing this work moves us closer to a more equitable system, one that upholds high expectations for all while ensuring that a student\u2019s zip code, background, or circumstance never determines their opportunities for success.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new policy is expected to take effect at the start of the 2027-28 school year. The Education Department plans to bring proposed regulatory changes to the Board of Regents by February 2027.<\/p>\n

For decades, Regents exams have been a milestone for New York high school students, though the DOE has been reconsidering the graduation requirements since 2019.<\/a><\/p>\n

Under the new framework, schools and districts will instead use multiple sources of evidence to assess student achievement, \u201cincluding classroom assessments, student work, performance-based learning experiences, educator observations, and State assessments,\u201d the DOE said in a press release.<\/p>\n

The state will also develop \u201chigh school accountability assessments specifically designed to provide comparable statewide evidence of student achievement and create opportunities to better measure academic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Federal law requires statewide high school assessments in English language arts, mathematics and science. New York’s federal accountability plan also includes social studies.<\/p>\n
