{"id":347274,"date":"2026-09-15T11:47:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T11:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/347274\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T11:47:31","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T11:47:31","slug":"mamdani-calls-for-crackdown-on-nycs-worst-drivers-after-series-of-hit-and-run-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/347274\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani calls for crackdown on NYC&#8217;s worst drivers after series of hit-and-run deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"7he2z\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday called for the creation of \u201cpedestrian-only\u201d districts and a crackdown on reckless and impaired drivers as part of his administration\u2019s first citywide plan to reduce traffic deaths.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"80nd2\">The plan laid out priorities for the next decade to advance the city\u2019s Vision Zero initiative, established in 2014 to improve street safety and eliminate traffic deaths.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ae09q\">Mamdani\u2019s update was light on specifics and many of his most aggressive proposals would require approval by state lawmakers in Albany<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"5uo3f\">After a series of hit-and-run crashes over the summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/blood-on-the-streets-mamdani-has-a-vision-zero-crisis\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">street safety advocates held a \u201cdie-in\u201d outside City Hall<\/a> and called for Mamdani to release his first Vision Zero plan.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"4bpfk\">Many of the commitments include initiatives the city has already begun, such as reducing the speed limit to 15 mph on more streets, which is permitted under a state measure called \u201cSammy\u2019s Law\u201d that passed in 2024. It also restores a commitment to \u201cdaylight\u201d\u2014 or to removing parking spaces near corners \u2014 at 1,000 intersections a year.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ciqbb\">Under former Mayor Eric Adams, DOT officials initially championed that type of redesign but later reversed course, saying it could make streets more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6bvtr\">City Transportation Commissioner Michael Flynn said the plan \u201c\u200aacknowledges that we all make mistakes, it&#8217;s human nature, and that our road systems should be designed so that those mistakes don&#8217;t cost us our lives as we simply try to get around our city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"agddd\">The plan also calls for state lawmakers to pass a proposed \u201cDrugged Driving Bill,\u201d which would allow prosecutors to charge drivers using drugs that impair driving.
