Cairo, NY (WRGB) \u2014 A reported assault at a Greene County campground escalated into a deadly confrontation Monday night when a man emerged from a camper holding what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at a New York State trooper, authorities said.<\/p>\n
New York State Police said troopers were called to the Whip-O-Will Campground in Cairo on Sept. 14, 2026, at about 8:22 p.m. for a report of an assault involving two males.<\/p>\n
When troopers arrived, they found the reported assault victim with a head injury. State Police said the victim directed troopers to a nearby camper in the campground where the other male involved was located.<\/p>\n
As troopers approached, State Police said a male subject exited the camper holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his right hand. The man pointed the apparent handgun at a trooper and continued advancing toward him, authorities said. The trooper then shot his gun, hitting the male.<\/p>\n
Troopers immediately provided medical aid and requested emergency medical services, State Police said. The male was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the identities of those involved are being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications and will be released in a subsequent update.<\/p>\n
The incident is being investigated by the New York Attorney General\u2019s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Catskill.<\/p>\n
