“Vision Zero” came to New York City in 2014 under the de Blasio administration. Since then, traffic deaths have declined by 30%, but there are still hundreds of fatalities each year.<\/p>\n
Despite the decline in traffic deaths, 210 people died from traffic fatalities in the city in 2025.<\/p>\n
To address traffic safety, the Mamdani administration is releasing its own version of the initiative called \u201cVision Zero Reimagined,\u201d with more than 100 policy commitments.<\/p>\n
Many of the proposals have already been implemented or are already in the works, and some must be approved by Albany.<\/p>\n
Some of the new proposals include developing the city\u2019s first pedestrian-only and pedestrian-priority districts, exploring higher tolls for large passenger vehicles and looking at strategies to expand towing capacity.<\/p>\n
But many of the details are hazy.<\/p>\n
There are eight strategic goals outlined in “Vision Zero Reimagined”:<\/p>\n
Remove dangerous drivers from our streets \u00a0
\nHold delivery platforms accountable for unsafe bike practices
\nEncourage people to walk and\/or take transit instead of drive
\nDiscourage oversized vehicles
\nExpand and maintain safety-focused street designs
\nExpand automated enforcement
\nLeverage emerging data for smarter interventions
\nImprove the safety of the city\u2019s municipal fleet<\/p>\n
A big part of the plan is discouraging driving in the city in favor of biking, walking, ride-share or public transit.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that’s great. I think if there are better options for public transit, that will be helpful. Also lower prices,\u201d Lynn told NY1 while waiting for the bus.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuses could be more efficient. If you have less cars on the road, more public transportation, that would be good,\u201d Paul Smotrys said while walking to the subway.<\/p>\n
But some commuters must use a car, like Phillip Grant, who drives between Queens and Manhattan.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s still a lot of delays with the MTA also. So we’re getting people off the streets, but then making it hard still to get to work or get out into the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But Grant agrees the streets should be safer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just think that if we had better policing or like just rules with driving like the speed limit, maybe having like speed cameras, then that’d be better and more helpful than having just congestion pricing and getting cars off the road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
As part of “Vision Zero,” there have been 2,500 speed cameras installed since 2022.<\/p>\n
Since 2014, there’s also been more than 3,000 speed bumps installed and more than 10 million traffic tickets issued by the NYPD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"“Vision Zero” came to New York City in 2014 under the de Blasio administration.
