Trooper shoots, kills apparent armed man after reported assault at campground<\/a><\/p>\nAccording to state police, troopers were called to the campground for reports of an assault between two men. Troopers located one man with a head injury, who directed them to a nearby camper where the other man was located.<\/p>\n
Colleen Christiana, who lives across the street from the campground, said she heard yelling and screaming around 8 or 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t think nothing of it. Then about 15, 20 minutes later, I hear the car. Cop cars and my dog’s barking like she’s nuts. And it stopped,” said Christiana.<\/p>\n
Christiana said she later thought she heard a gunshot.<\/p>\n
“I wasn’t really sure, you know, because my dog was barking, so I wasn’t really sure. And that was about it,” said Christiana.<\/p>\n
State police said troopers located the second man inside a camper. According to investigators, the man came outside carrying what appeared to be a handgun and approached troopers. One of the troopers then fired their weapon.<\/p>\n
Hamza was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
Christiana, who said she has lived near the campground for about a year, described the area as normally quiet.<\/p>\n
“Nothing happens here,” Christiana said when asked whether anything similar had happened since she moved there. “It’s just, you know, normal. But this ain’t normal.”<\/p>\n
In a statement posted on Facebook, Whip-O-Will Campground said the “Whip-O-Will family is saddened by the tragic events involving a transient camper…”<\/p>\n
The campground said it was grateful all seasonal staff members were safe and thanked law enforcement for its quick response.<\/p>\n
The New York State Attorney General’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigations are investigating the case.<\/p>\n
