The Health Department hosted a town hall public meeting on Tuesday to address the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in the Bronx.<\/p>\n
Dozens of community members gathered at Metropolitan College in Melrose to learn about the disease and voice concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re all breathing the same air,\u201d said Patricia Wright, who attended the meeting. \u201cWe\u2019re all living in the same space.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s after the fact and that\u2019s when they want to do something,\u201d said Roberta Yancey, who also attended the meeting.<\/p>\n
The town hall occurred after the Health Department announced there are now 11 confirmed cases in the cluster.<\/p>\n
One person has died. Three others remain hospitalized.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t find out about this, \u2018this\u2019 meaning the one death, until this morning,\u201d said Donavin White, who attended the town hall.<\/p>\n
Health officials said they discovered the cluster on Sept. 10, when 10 cooling towers tested positive – including at Yankee Stadium and Lincoln Hospital.<\/p>\n
The department said those towers have since been drained and cleaned.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s scary, you know, to think that you walk past that area,\u201d Yancey said. \u201cHow long has it been that way?\u201d<\/p>\n
New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin said Legionnaires’ is not contagious and the public cannot get the disease by drinking water or using the air conditioner.<\/p>\n
