Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled Vision Zero Reimagined<\/a>, a 10-year street safety blueprint that features more than 100 policy commitments designed to prevent traffic deaths and serious injuries across New York City.<\/p>\n

The citywide plan brings together 19 city agencies, mayoral offices and partners to expand street safety efforts while unlocking the potential of New York City streets as public spaces.<\/p>\n

Among the plan\u2019s major initiatives <\/a>are developing the city\u2019s first pedestrian-only and pedestrian-priority districts, expanding implementation of Sammy\u2019s Law, installing hardened daylighting or other safety treatments at at least 1,000 intersections each year, and redesigning untreated Vision Zero Priority Corridors over the next three years.<\/p>\n

The administration also plans to pursue new legal tools to hold dangerous drivers accountable, focusing on motorists responsible for a disproportionate share of traffic deaths and serious injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should not have to wait for another family to lose a loved one before we make a street safer,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cWe are committed to building safe streets before tragedy \u2014 not because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the city, traffic deaths are down 30% compared with before Vision Zero launched in 2014.<\/p>\n

Targeting dangerous drivers<\/p>\n

One of the plan\u2019s eight strategic goals focuses on removing dangerous drivers from city streets.<\/p>\n

According to the administration, a small number of drivers with documented histories of reckless behavior account for 37% of all traffic deaths. Vehicles receiving more than 16 speed-camera violations in a year are twice as likely to be involved in a crash causing serious injury or death.<\/p>\n

The city also said 41% of traffic fatalities involve a driver without a valid license, with a previous suspension or with multiple convictions.<\/p>\n

The plan calls for closing enforcement gaps involving so-called \u201cghost plates,\u201d raising standards for maintaining and restoring driver licenses and launching New York City\u2019s first Super Speeder program.<\/p>\n

E-bikes and micromobility<\/p>\n

The plan also seeks to create a safety framework for e-bikes<\/a> and e-scooters while recognizing micromobility as a way to reduce car dependence, cut emissions and expand affordable transportation.<\/p>\n

Proposals include holding delivery platforms accountable for unsafe practices, expanding bike and e-scooter sharing with built-in safety training and removing illegal or uncertified devices from city streets.<\/p>\n

Safer streets and intersections<\/p>\n

The city plans to expand pedestrian-priority zones, protected bicycle networks, traffic-calmed corridors and safer intersections.<\/p>\n

Untreated Vision Zero Priority Corridors \u2014 identified as some of the city\u2019s most dangerous streets \u2014 would receive safety redesigns over the next three years.<\/p>\n

The city also plans to install hardened daylighting or other safety treatments at a minimum of 1,000 intersections annually.<\/p>\n

Reducing reliance on cars<\/p>\n

Vision Zero Reimagined also seeks to encourage walking, public transit, micromobility and shared vehicles over private automobile use.<\/p>\n

According to the plan, crashes involving cars account for nearly 90% of New York City traffic fatalities, with pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users frequently among the victims.<\/p>\n

The city plans to build a faster and more accessible bus system, expand protected and low-stress cycling networks and make bike and e-scooter sharing more affordable and accessible.<\/p>\n

Technology, education and safer vehicles<\/p>\n

The administration will also advocate for stronger federal safety standards for large vehicles, safer truck designs and local oversight of any future deployment of autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n

The plan calls for a unified Vision Zero data warehouse to identify crash patterns and guide future safety interventions.<\/p>\n

Vision Zero would also be incorporated into public school curricula, while outreach to older adults and operator training would be expanded.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s municipal fleet would increase its use of technologies including Intelligent Speed Assistance, automatic emergency braking, telematics, audible alerts and high-visibility truck designs.<\/p>\n
