Some industries in New York state are struggling to fill jobs because of a shortage of qualified candidates. A nationwide change to Pell Grants is hoping to alleviate some of that.<\/p>\n
Pell Grants are typically available for students in traditional, long-term degree programs. But now an entirely new category of students will have access to these funds for the first time.<\/p>\n
The federal government is allowing states to release Pell Grant dollars to students pursuing short-term job training in high-demand fields, such as nursing and cybersecurity. Institutions like Orange County Community College must apply to the governor\u2019s office before they can release these funds. They have to demonstrate that the programs they offer are aligned with the labor market, and meet quality and performance standards.<\/p>\n
These job trainings typically last between eight and 15 weeks, but can cost thousands of dollars. Jean Leandre, the vice president of workforce, strategy, and innovation at Orange County Community College, says this new initiative will ease that burden.<\/p>\n
\u201cNormally what they would do is either pay out of pocket for it or they would go through Orange County’s career center to be able to pay for it,” said Leandre. “But now they have a third option, and this is the exciting part, is they could actually apply through workforce Pell, as every other student applies for Pell.\u201d<\/p>\n
