CAIRO, N.Y. (WNYT) \u2013 New York State Police said a man was shot and killed by a trooper after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a handgun during an assault response in Cairo.<\/p>\n
Troopers responded at about 8:22 p.m. Sept. 14 to Whip O Will Campground at 644 Route 31 in the Town of Cairo for a report of an assault involving two males. Police said they found the assault victim with a head injury, and the victim directed troopers to a nearby camper.<\/p>\n
Police said a male subject then came out of the camper holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his right hand. According to New York State Police, the subject pointed the apparent handgun at a trooper and kept moving toward him before the trooper fired his duty weapon and struck the subject.<\/p>\n
Troopers then gave medical aid and called for emergency medical services. EMS personnel pronounced the subject dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
The identities of the people involved are being withheld pending next of kin notifications and will be released in a later update.<\/p>\n
The New York Attorney General\u2019s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Catskill are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call New York State Police at 845-344-5300.<\/p>\n
