King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark just closed the book on this year’s sailing season, only days after standing among the crowned heads of Europe at King Harald V of Norway’s funeral in Oslo. The royal couple formally stepped off the Dannebrog, Denmark’s royal yacht, at the Nordre Toldbod dock in Copenhagen, marking the end of a summer that had taken the ship from Baltic coastal towns to a Swedish birthday party to a Norwegian state funeral in the span of a few months.<\/p>\n

The disembarkation carried the weight of tradition. Frederik and Mary<\/a> greeted every member of the Royal Guard’s young recruits who had served aboard the yacht that season, thanking them individually and presenting each with a photograph to keep as a memento of their time at sea.<\/p>\n

Mary<\/a> dressed the part for a nautical send-off, choosing a white skirt suit finished with an anchor-shaped brooch, a piece crafted in yellow gold and set with diamonds. The brooch is more than d\u00e9cor. It’s a favorite motif among the women of the Danish royal family, worn over the years by both Queen Ingrid and\u00a0Queen Margrethe, and it doubles as a quiet nod of respect to the Royal Danish Navy, one of the institutions most central to the country’s security.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mary rounded out the look with pink heels and a colorful floral-print headband, while Frederik<\/a> arrived in full admiral’s dress uniform for the sail into port.<\/p>\n

\nA Familiar Accent on the Dock<\/p>\n

The couple was welcomed at Nordre Toldbod by Nanna Westerby Jensen, director of the harbor authority By & Havn (sometimes rendered in English as “City & Port”), and by harbor captain Christian Kopp Pedersen. It was in that moment, as they came ashore, that a cluster of Australian tourists caught Mary’s eye. The queen, herself Tasmanian-born, paused to acknowledge her compatriots with a wide smile, telling them: “Lovely to see you.”<\/p>\n

The Dannebrog is far more than a boat. It functions as the monarchy’s official summer residence, an honest-to-goodness floating palace at 78.43 meters long, and it carries the royal family each year to vacation spots and official visits up and down Denmark’s coastline. It also doubles as a training vessel for Navy recruits and young sailors working through their military instruction.<\/p>\n

Now closing in on a century of service, the Dannebrog has logged more than 800,000 nautical miles and marked its 90th anniversary back in 2022. This year’s tour, the couple’s traditional cruise along the Baltic coast, ran from June 1 to June 4 and stopped in the municipalities of Odense, Norddjurs and Holb\u00e6k, along with several other Danish ports.<\/p>\n

The yacht’s 2026 calendar carried it well beyond home waters, too. In late April, the royal family sailed it to Stockholm for King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s birthday celebrations. Then, just last week, the Dannebrog carried the couple to Oslo for King Harald V’s funeral.<\/p>\n

The season wrapped up last night with the traditional “farewell dinner,” an official banquet the king and queen host for the ship’s officers at Frederik VIII’s Palace, part of the royal residential complex at Amalienborg in Copenhagen. It’s become a fixture on the calendar, giving the king a formal chance to thank the military crew for their service before the sailing season is officially closed out.<\/p>\n
