So, why FiDi? What was once merely the center of the business world\u2014and a hotspot for finance bros of all ages\u2014has gone through something of a renaissance. In the mid-1990s, some of the commercial buildings in the\u00a0neighborhood began their transition into residential. Then, after the 2001 September 11 attacks hit the area, that shift sped up dramatically. Little by little, the neighborhood started morphing into the cultural hub it is right now.<\/p>\n
More recently, the shift has exuded a cooler air. No, I\u2019m not talking about the breeze from both the Hudson and East rivers, I\u2019m talking about the influx of fashion folks, artists and big-name chefs. Plus, its cameo appearances on Bravo\u2019s Summer House haven\u2019t hurt.<\/p>\n
On the flip side, the area is authentically tied to the city\u2019s past in a way few others can boast. It\u2019s jam packed with historic hotspots (Wall Street, New York Stock Exchange, Federal Hall, World Trade Center) and holds the key to old New Amsterdam in its lower half (it was the first part of Manhattan to be developed around 400 years ago, and the architecture\u2014and some bars\u2014remains to tell that story).<\/p>\n

The neighborhood\u2019s recent stamp of approval came from the fashion and creative worlds via WSA<\/a> (161 Water Street and at 180 Maiden Lane), a creative hub that houses exhibition, event and wellness spaces, production studios, food and beverage concepts, and creative offices\u2014it\u2019s become a favorite among designers and brands for New York Fashion Week events. And you can’t forget about the opening of Parisian ultraluxe department store Printemps<\/a>, with its\u00a0variety of chic bars and eateries.<\/p>\n Award-winning restaurants <\/a>such as Manhatta<\/a>, Crown Shy<\/a>, Saga<\/a> and Maison Passerelle<\/a> have helped this transition along, giving the so-called cool kids somewhere to dine after facing years of \u201cno good food\u201d accusations. The ultimate event venue for the rich and famous, Cipriani<\/a>, operates three locations in the neighborhood. But there\u2019s also food that real people with modest paychecks want to eat: 77 Burger (get the California or Chipotle, always curly fries), Fish Market in Seaport,\u00a0Caravan Uyghur Cuisine and very many slice shops (Cucina Bene and Joe\u2019s Pizza<\/a> are my picks for something reliable\u2014the former has a full menu of salads, pasta and heroes).<\/p>\n Carved out along the eastern edge is The Seaport, which means Pier 17<\/a> concerts, an independent book shop and the new Balloon Museum<\/a> are at your fingertips. On FiDi\u2019s lower half you\u2019ll find those cobblestone streets and New Amsterdam-era buildings. Stone Street, while more famous for all-day drinking fests that make it look more like Dublin than NYC, is crucial to the neighborhood. With all the fame and frills that have moved in, this strip of bars and eateries, along with the ones around it, provide a reprieve for those who want to just throw on jeans, down a pint, and be the overgrown kids we are. It balances out the polish with some ruggedness; new with history\u2014and I think for this neighborhood to be truly cool, it must have both.<\/p>\n Feeling convinced?
