THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — An NYPD officer is accused of stealing around $50,000 in cash and jewelry from a Bronx home and trying to cover it up, prosecutors said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Officer Luis Triunfel, 33, of the 28th Precinct in Manhattan, allegedly took a shopping cart containing a safe from the first-floor apartment on Boynton Avenue at around 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 31, according to the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n
The safe had approximately $9,500 in cash, $38,500 in gold jewelry, a passport, a green card, and a Social Security card, authorities said.<\/p>\n
After the heist, Triunfel allegedly went back to the apartment and erased the surveillance video capturing the incident, according to court records.<\/p>\n
The cop is also accused of using an NYPD database to look up information on the victim and the complaint report in the case, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n
Triunfel was arrested Monday and charged with burglary, grand larceny, tampering with the evidence and computer trespass, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The cop pleaded not guilty and was released without bail at his arraignment, according to court records. His attorney could not be reached.<\/p>\n
Triunfel has been suspended without pay, police said.<\/p>\n
