General Assembly next week

The NYPD says, after a summer of big events like the World Cup and the Knicks Championship Parade, the department is ready to make sure the annual U.N. General Assembly — the largest gathering of world leaders in the world — is safe and secure.

As the city prepares to once again host presidents, prime ministers and other senior representatives from nearly 200 countries, the NYPD is ramping up security at and around the United Nations in Midtown.

“Thousands of uniformed NYPD officers will be posted at and around UN Headquarters all week, supported by heavy weapons teams, our aviation and harbor units, K9, the bomb squad, NYPD’s drone team, counterterrorism officers and other specialized units,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference Thursday at One Police Plaza.

The world leaders will discuss global conflicts like the U.S. war in Iran, plus issues like climate change and the risks of artificial intelligence.

“What an honor it is for New York City — a city that so proudly reflects the world through the languages we speak, the food we eat, and the people who call it home, to serve as the backdrop of this work, and yet we know that New York City is always a target, and especially so when thousands of international representatives are present,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said alongside Tisch and federal law enforcement officials.

The NYPD says there are no known credible threats against the General Assembly or our city, but it’s working closely with its federal partners, including the U.S. Secret Service and the State Department, to keep world leaders and diplomats safe next week.

“Our officers will secure hundreds of motorcades as heads of state, foreign ministers and other senior officials move between the U.N., hotels, meetings and events across New York City,” Tisch said.

Like every year when the world visits the city, New Yorkers can expect gridlock. This year, drivers are advised to plan around it from Sept. 21-25 and expect road closures to pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and around the U.N. building.

“My job as the mayor is to ensure that the impact to New Yorkers is as minimal as possible in terms of their ability to go from point A to point B,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani also walked back his calls to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The NYPD says it’s still expecting an uptick in protest activity around the General Assembly, as it does every year, including protests against Netanyahu, who will be among the world leaders taking the podium next week.

“The NYPD is prepared to work with organizers of protests and facilitate First Amendment activity, and as always, we have no tolerance for violence or destruction of property, or breaking the law,” Tisch said.

Mamdani has not yet confirmed if he will be meeting with President Donald Trump or other world leaders on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, only saying today he will have a few meetings, which his administration is in the process of setting up, and that more details will be released soon.

Trump is expected to speak in front of the General Assembly on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The NYPD says, after a summer of big events like the World Cup and the Knicks Championship Parade,…

[8
203,387,25,9,24,55,54,6019,56,308,7675,27,200
post-349798","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-city","tag-app-education","tag-app-public-safety","tag-app-top-stories","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-new-york-city-headlines","tag-new-york-city-news","tag-noorulain-khawaja","tag-ny","tag-public-safety","tag-religion","tag-top-stories","tag-vod
["GET
