rejected<\/a> efforts from the Trump administration to restrict mail-in ballots for the midterm elections.<\/p>\nThe union that represents letter carriers is pleased with the ruling, but is worried that the issue may not be a done deal in the future.<\/p>\n
\u201cThankful for now, but we’re on the lookout,\u201d said Monique Mate, president of Branch 210 of the National Association of Letter Carriers.<\/p>\n
She says letter carriers shouldn\u2019t be caught in the middle this close to an election.<\/p>\n
\u201cI’m thankful for the Supreme Court upholding their decision,”\u00a0Mate said. “But my fear is this is not the end and that this is going to be an ongoing thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we are always monitoring what is occurring both at a federal, state and obviously local level here,\u201d said Democratic Monroe County Board of Elections Commissioner Jackie Ortiz. \u201cIf and when something happens, we will be there to make sure that everyone is informed of what they do or don’t have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
The New York State Board of Elections states that mail in ballots must be postmarked before Nov. 3 and received no later than Nov. 10.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we do, and we’ve always done for as long as I’ve been here for the 30 years, is we just comply with the law as it comes down,\u201d said Republican Monroe County Board of Elections Commissioner Peter Elder. \u201cSo, our job is really to just do the administrative task of making sure elections go forward. So, when a directive comes down, we implement it.\u201d<\/p>\n
While there is no directive for now, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh indicated he agrees the restrictions should not go into effect for this November\u2019s election, but he stated he might rule in favor of the Trump Administration\u2019s request if it comes before the court at a future date. President Donald Trump says changes need to be made in order to maintain the integrity of federal elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here to provide a service for everybody in the United States or everybody,\u201d Mate said. \u201cAnd that’s what we do. And we want to continue to do it and not pick and choose what we can and cannot deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, the mail-in ballot process will not change according to the Supreme Court, and voters choosing to vote by absentee ballot or mail-in should use the same procedure as in past elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"People who vote by mail can expect no changes to the process this November.
