Three employees of a nursing home in Ilion have been charged in connection to the death of a resident for allegedly letting her choke to death, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The 34-year-old resident began her stay at The Grand at Mohawk Valley nursing home three days before her death on Aug. 23.<\/p>\n
The AG’s office said she was left alone in the facility’s dining room, swallowed a meatball and began choking. One of the staff members allegedly noticed the resident was choking and did not call for help.<\/p>\n
That’s where she remained for an hour and a half before other employees brought her to her room and called 911. She was pronounced dead in her room.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, the resident suffered from a rare genetic condition, which made it difficult to swallow solid food, requiring constant supervision. She also had an eating disorder.<\/p>\n
The three employees were charged with multiple felonies and one misdemeanor.
