NEW YORK (TNND) \u2014 Two 24-year-old New Jersey friends were hit and killed by a subway train in Manhattan, with video showing them sitting on the tracks moments before the train arrived, according to reports.<\/p>\n
Citing the New York Police Department, PEOPLE<\/a> reported that Malaika Chitre, of Dayton, and Navam Kaul, of Sayreville, were hit by a southbound train at the Spring Street station on Sunday around 3:15 a.m.<\/p>\n Responding officers found the pair on the tracks and they were pronounced dead at the scene, the media outlet noted.<\/p>\n Video reviewed by investigators and witnesses appeared to show two people sitting on the tracks before the train arrived, according to the New New York Daily News<\/a>. The train operator tried to stop, but could not avoid hitting them.<\/p>\n Investigators have not said why the friends were on the tracks, but the Daily News<\/a> reported that one of them appeared to have fallen on the tracks, with the other jumping down to help. <\/p>\n About 100 passengers were evacuated from the train following the crash, per the Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n
