WASHINGTON \u2014 Democrats and progressives exploded with outrage after the Senate took a\u00a0giant step\u00a0toward reopening the government Sunday night<\/a>, with many calling for Minority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2019s ouster.<\/p>\n

Schumer (D-NY), who voted against the bipartisan package to end the longest government shutdown in US history, was slammed for failing to prevent five Democratic defections that allowed the measure to advance, despite Republicans making no concessions on keeping Obamacare subsidies due to expire at the end of this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cSenator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,\u201d Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) chided on X. \u201cIf you can\u2019t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight is another example of why we need new leadership,\u201d jeered Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), who launched his primary challenge to Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) last month, on X. \u201cIf @ChuckSchumer were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote \u2018No\u2019 tonight and hold the line on healthcare.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe now @EdMarkey will finally join me in pledging not to vote for Schumer [as conference leader after the 2026 elections]?\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic candidates trying to unseat Senate Republicans next year also made their displeasure clear.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democrats were outraged after a vote Sunday paved the way toward reopening the government. @cspan\/X<\/p>\n

\u201cChuck Schumer is not built for this moment,\u201d wrote Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, who hopes to challenge Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cChuck Schumer has failed us,\u201d agreed Iowa state Sen. Zach Wahls, running for the open seat held by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa).\u00a0<\/p>\n

The quintet \u2014 Minority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Jacky Rosen of Nevada \u2014 voted to end debate on a deal whose main terms had been offered by Republicans weeks ago.<\/p>\n

Shaheen\u2019s own daughter, Stefany, who is running for the Democratic nomination in New Hampshire\u2019s 1st Congressional District, announced on social media that she would reject the deal her mother helped broker.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot support this deal when Speaker Johnson refuses to even allow a vote to extend health care tax credits,\u201d\u00a0Stefany Shaheen declared on X.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe need to both end this shutdown and extend the ACA tax credits. Otherwise, no deal. It\u2019s essential to ensure people have access to health care and it\u2019s past time to put paychecks back into people\u2019s pockets and food back on families\u2019 tables.\u201d<\/p>\n

In exchange for their vote to advance the package, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) agreed to give Democrats a vote on extending the enhanced Obamacare subsidies, but did not guarantee its passage \u2014 and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) hasn\u2019t even committed to taking the measure up in the lower chamber.<\/p>\n

Republicans also agreed to rehire federal workers who were laid off during the shutdown and provide back pay to all government employees who went without pay during the funding lapse<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To many Democrats, it was a slap in the face following the party\u2019s strong showing in the Nov. 4 elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight\u2019s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength,\u201d fumed California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a>. \u201cInstead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.\u00a0The American people need more from their leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also lashed out against the bipartisan deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnding the shutdown shouldn\u2019t come at the expense of health care for tens of millions of Americans,\u201d she sniped. \u201cThis deal paves the way for devastating premium hikes that will drive up costs for New Yorkers. Count me out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis \u2018deal\u2019 dramatically hikes healthcare premiums and only exacerbates the affordability crisis,\u201d added NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani<\/a>. \u201cIt should be rejected, as should any politics willing to compromise on the basic needs of working people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The bipartisan deal, which will fund the government through Jan. 30, 2026, and fund government programs related to veterans, the military, and the Department of Agriculture through Sept. 30, 2026, is expected to clear the Senate as early as Monday.<\/p>\n
