It was unclear whether Trump intends for the outlets to be booted from the \u201cpool\u201d rotations of reporters given special access to the president or banished altogether from the White House grounds \u2014 though the president indicated he favored the latter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ban on the free press, right? A very simple ban,\u201d Trump explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t want them in my office. I don\u2019t want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can, and if they could straighten themselves out, I\u2019d love it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump added that his announcement targeting the three outlets was result of \u201ccumulative stories over the last two years\u201d rather than any single report, adding: \u201cYou get sick of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ban is because they are fake news, they cannot write the truth \u2026 Now, if they want to write [such content], that\u2019s fine. But I don\u2019t have to let them into my \u2014 into the people\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a statement, CNN insisted the network has a constitutional right to report \u201cwithout hindrance or interference from the government.\u201d<\/p>\n
President Trump said that the outlets are banned \u201ceffective immediately.\u201d Truth Social\/@realDonaldTrump<\/p>\n
\u201cShould the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right,\u201d the network said.<\/p>\n
White House Correspondents\u2019 Association president Jacqui Heinrich said: \u201cThe Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization\u2019s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation\u2019s highest office,\u201d said Heinrich, a Fox News correspondent. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe WHCA stands in defense of our colleagues at CNN, MSNOW, and Politico who are being singled out for doing their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump himself admitted his proposed restrictions might not hold up in court, saying, \u201cIt depends on the judge you get, to be honest with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House last year removed the Associated Press, which previously attended all presidential events, from pooled access after the wire service refused to go along with his rebrand of the Gulf of Mexico as the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The AP sued and was later allowed into the daily print pool rotation, made up of more than 30 outlets. That legal fight is ongoing.<\/p>\n
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a former White House press secretary from Trump\u2019s first term, defended the president as she attended an unrelated healthcare announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the president is right to support the First Amendment, but he\u2019s also right to ask that you be honest and fair,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prospective order has major practical implications \u2014 potentially upending the long-standing ability of reporters to gain access to the White House, even if events that require an RSVP oftentimes feature opaque access hurdles.<\/p>\n
CNN is a member of the TV pool rotation that ensures presidential remarks are broadcast live from the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The \u201cfive families\u201d that operate that feed \u2014 whose number include ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News \u2014 are particularly powerful in negotiating press access with Trump, who often demands network coverage of his comments.<\/p>\n
Reporters from each of the three outlets also serve in pool rotations that \u2014 until now \u2014 have been largely respected by the second Trump administration.<\/p>\n
CNN has a six-person booth at the White House and its reporters file stand-ups from tents on the North Lawn, as does MS Now. Politico, like other print publications, has an assigned workspace adjacent to the White House briefing room.<\/p>\n
Trump threatened in his Truth Social announcement that \u201cOther Fake News Media Outlets\u201d would henceforth be banned and specifically called out the Washington Post and New York Times in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re probably not going to display the paper anymore in the White House, those papers, but we haven\u2019t taken the step of throwing them out. But they\u2019re fake news, totally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
