The incident that led to Brooks’ death was caught on body-worn cameras. The footage released by the New York attorney general’s office shows correctional officers hitting Brooks while he was restrained at the prison on Dec. 9. He died at a hospital in Utica.

More than a dozen people employed at the prison were fired following the incident. Multiple correction officers who were involved were charged in connection with Brooks’ death. Many were convicted or took plea agreements, while two were acquitted at trial.

Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement on Friday addressing the settlement:

“No family should ever have to endure what the family of Robert Brooks has been through. The senseless killing of Mr. Brooks by those charged with protecting him horrified us all. While I am grateful for law enforcement and the District Attorney’s efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable, there is nothing that can erase the pain the Brooks family has endured. It is my hope that this agreement will provide them with some measure of relief in the aftermath of his loss.

“Robert Brooks should be alive today. Every individual who enters a DOCCS facility deserves to be safe, and I am committed to continuing to do everything in my power to ensure our correctional facilities are fully reformed and safe for all.

“I want to send a message loud and clear: We have zero tolerance for anyone who violates their oath by committing an act of violence or putting the safety of others at risk.”

The family of a Rochester man who was beaten to death by correction officers nearly two years ago…

[8
257,11180,9,24,55,54,49,12,56,308,115
post-350838","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-city","tag-central-ny","tag-keegan-trunick","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-new-york-city-headlines","tag-new-york-city-news","tag-new-york-state","tag-news","tag-ny","tag-public-safety","tag-rochester
["GET
