ORISKANY, N.Y. \u2014 On Monday, Sept. 14, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon visited the Oneida County Sheriff\u2019s Office to present Sheriff Rob Maciol with a New York State Assembly Resolution honoring the Office of Sheriff in recognition of Sheriff\u2019s Week in the State of New York, observed this year from September 14-20.<\/p>\n
\u201cRecognizing our Sheriff\u2019s Offices across the State with a New York State Resolution is a small token to thank them for all they do,\u201d Buttenschon said in a news release.<\/p>\n
Sheriff\u2019s Week in the State of New York honors the state\u2019s sheriffs and deputies who serve on the front lines of public safety. It serves to recognize the dedicated men and women who have answered the call to preserve and protect the safety of our communities with unwavering courage, leadership and commitment.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday I presented Sheriff Maciol and his team with the resolution and thanked them for keeping our community safe, as their office touches nearly every corner of public safety in the Mohawk Valley, from our streets and trails, courts and county jail, to the hallways of our schools,\u201d Buttenschon said.<\/p>\n
Today, the duties of the Office of Sheriff encompass numerous facets of public service, including county-wide law enforcement, maintaining county correctional facilities, providing court security, dispatching emergency services, serving and executing the civil process for the court system.<\/p>\n
The Oneida County Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2019s School Resource Officer and Special Patrol Officer programs, safeguarding students and staff in schools across Oneida County.<\/p>\n
The first Constitution of the newly formed State of New York established the Office of Sheriff. The office is one of the first public offices established in colonial America and has remained an integral role in the state\u2019s criminal justice system ever since.<\/p>\n
While the function, status, and powers of the office has changed over the course of our history, the Office of Sheriff has remained a constant and invaluable presence within the law enforcement community of New York State.<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir work is more than a profession, it\u2019s a calling, and it is an honor to recognize the service and dedication of Sheriff Maciol and the entire Oneida County Sheriff\u2019s Office with this Resolution on behalf of the State of New York and the New York State Assembly,\u201d Buttenschon said.<\/p>\n
Buttenschon represents New York\u2019s 119th Assembly District, encompassing the cities of Utica and Rome and the towns of Floyd, Deerfield, Marcy and Whitestown.<\/p>\n
