USMNT call-up Julian Hall capped off a memorable week by scoring the solitary goal in Red Bull New York\u2019s<\/a> Hudson River Derby victory, 1-0, over New York City FC (NYCFC)<\/a> at Yankee Stadium Friday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hall, called up to the USMNT for the first time on Thursday and playing in front of US coach Mauricio Pochettino under the lights at Yankee Stadium, capitalized on a calamitous James Sands backpass midway through the second half to secure a smash-and-grab victory for the Red Bulls, who claimed their first regular-season derby win since 2023.<\/p>\n

Hall\u2019s effort was the only one on target that Red Bull managed in 90 minutes on Friday, fittingly coming via an NYCFC error rather than any attacking ingenuity in a game that the hosts largely bossed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it will matter little to Michael Bradley and Red Bull, who leapfrog NYCFC into eighth in the Eastern Conference and give their season a real shot in the arm with eight games left to play.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big win,\u201d Bradley said. \u201cIt\u2019s a big night. We\u2019re really proud of the group.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

For Pascal Jansen and NYCFC, however, the result means they have won just once in their last nine league outings and now sit precariously in ninth \u2013 their play-off hopes in the balance \u2013 after a familiar story of wastefulness in front of goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think overall, if you look at the moments that we\u2019ve created, the looks that we\u2019ve had, we deserved more,\u201d Jansen said. \u201cBut then you have to have clinical finishing in these moments.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was the hosts who enjoyed the better of a turgid opening half, dominating possession from the outset and looking far more threatening than a toothless Red Bull outfit that picked up more yellow cards than shots on goal in 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

Nico Fern\u00e1ndez Mercau, who pulled the strings for NYCFC throughout the opening half, went close after six minutes when he dragged a right-footed effort narrowly wide of the post from just outside the area. Andr\u00e9s Perea later forced Ethan Horvath into a smart save with a well-struck long-range effort after the hosts won possession deep into Red Bull territory.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perea\u2019s effort was the only shot on target either team managed in a forgettable first half as NYCFC struggled to convert its 71% possession into goalscoring opportunities.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Agust\u00edn Ojeda was a constant threat down the right but too often failed to find a blue shirt with his final delivery, while Luighi made himself a handful through the middle but frequently encountered a lack of support in the Red Bull penalty area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The visitors, meanwhile, produced a pitiful effort going forward, registering their first shot of the game on 33 minutes when Matthew Dos Santos fired a wild free kick high into the Yankee Stadium crowd. They managed their first shot from open play in first-half stoppage time when Hall saw an effort comfortably blocked as the half drifted to a dreary conclusion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hall was on the end of a much better chance within two minutes of the restart when Cade Cowell beat the offside trap down the left and picked out the 18-year-old with an inch-perfect center. With only Matt Freese to beat, however, Hall got his contact all wrong, and the first-time effort drifted well wide of the post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

NYCFC was guilty of missing its own golden opportunity minutes later when Red Bulls defender Tim Parker made a mess of a routine long ball, with the ball eventually recycled to Hannes Wolf 12 yards out. But the Austrian\u2019s effort was tame, allowing Horvath to make a diving save.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Within two minutes, Luighi had missed an even better opportunity after Fern\u00e1ndez Mercau showed dancing feet down the right wing before picking him out with a glorious pass across the Red Bull penalty area. In acres of space, it seemed easier to score than miss, but the Brazilian guided his close-range effort wide of the post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The hosts were made to pay dearly for their wastefulness in front of goal moments later when Sands underhit a simple backpass to Freese, allowing Hall to race onto the short ball and round the stranded NYCFC \u2018keeper on the edge of the area before tapping into the empty net.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy eyes kind of lit up, to be honest,\u201d Hall said of the opportunity. \u201cI worked really hard to put pressure on him (Sands), and thankfully the ball ended up in my path.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Bradley, meanwhile, credited Hall for aggressively pressing and forcing the error.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cJules chases and chases and sprints and that forces a mistake, and then he does really well to go around Freese and score.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The goal served as a sucker punch for the hosts, who visibly lost composure in the following 10 minutes, with the Red Bulls finally growing into the encounter.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

But NYCFC gradually regained control as they probed for an equalizer in the final 20 minutes, with substitute Alonso Martinez spurning a golden opportunity to tie the game on 76 minutes when he raced onto a Nico Cavallo through ball.<\/p>\n

Martinez, playing in an NYCFC home game for the first time since sustaining an ACL injury last year, beat Horvath but failed to get the right contact on the effort, allowing the visitors to scramble clear.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Horvath had to be alert to tip over a fierce Thiago Martins header as the game entered the final 10 minutes, and he produced an even better save in injury time, spreading himself to smother a close-range effort from substitute B\u00e9nie Traor\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p>\n
