If you didn\u2019t know, Hoboken is undergoing some changes this fall. The Fall Arts + Music Festival, which has traditionally been held every year, is being replaced by the River City Fair, an old-school Mile Square<\/a> tradition that preceded the event we know and love. This fair originated in the 1970s as a grassroots waterfront event organized by the Hoboken Environment Committee. What some may not know, however, is the fight for the city\u2019s cultural and industrial growth that the River City Fair represented. Now, with its return on Saturday, September 26th, it\u2019s important to remember the causes it stood for. Keep reading to learn about the history of Hoboken\u2019s River City Fair.\n<\/p>\n

The River City Fair\u2019s Origins<\/p>\n

Hoboken\u2019s River City Fair started in 1973<\/a> as a message to the city: make the waterfront more accessible. Around this time, Hoboken\u2019s shoreline was dominated by industrial structures and largely preserved for work, with little to do recreationally. As stated in a 1974 newspaper<\/a>, \u201cThere is presently no place in Hoboken where people can go to enjoy the Hudson River \u2026 the River City Fair was supposed to call attention to that and renew interest in the recreational possibilities of a waterfront park.\u201d The event marked the start of a long-standing initiative to make the waterfront a legitimate destination for community events and programming.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

The event was sponsored by Stevens Institute of Technology<\/a> and organized through the Hoboken Environment Committee, which was founded in 1970<\/a> to protect and advocate for the city\u2019s waterfront and environment. It was originally met with indifference and considered potentially unsustainable due to a lack of sponsorship and interference with traffic along River Street.<\/p>\n

However, it proved successful, with a good turnout of residents and plenty of attractions, including live entertainment, arts showcases, local vendors, environmental programming, and more. Visitors were invited to board vessels docked along the pier<\/a>, including the historic Hudson River sloop Clearwater, while enjoying the activities. It also became a hot spot for rock bands, jazz ensembles, and other performers to showcase their music. In its first couple of years, the fair attracted over 5,000 people<\/a> and received newspaper and television coverage.\n<\/p>\n

Over time, the River City Fair began to gain a reputation as a cultural hub for showcasing local artists + businesses and bringing the community together. The event\u2019s long-standing impact was immense, as the Hoboken waterfront<\/a> is now a beloved destination for public activities. In 1994, it transitioned into the Fall Arts + Music Festival<\/a> and moved to Washington Street, where it remained until this year.\n<\/p>\n

This Year\u2019s Event<\/p>\n

The 2026 River City Fair<\/a> will take place on Saturday, September 26th, from 12PM to 5PM. It will be held along Sinatra Drive from First Street to Fifth Street and transform Hoboken\u2019s waterfront into a family-friendly entertainment destination, much like the fair did when it started over 50 years ago. It is organized by the Division of Cultural Affairs and sponsored by the Hoboken Business Alliance.\n<\/p>\n

It will feature two stages at Sinatra Park + Pier A, with live music performances. The headliner for this year will be Cherokee Social, a Colorado-based indie pop duo. Sinatra Park will also be transformed into a kids\u2019 zone with youth band performances, an area for young vendors, bounce houses, and Dinosaurs Arise.\n<\/p>\n
