{"id":352292,"date":"2026-09-21T10:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T10:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/352292\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T10:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T10:28:11","slug":"community-mourns-15-year-old-fatally-hit-by-a-truck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/352292\/","title":{"rendered":"Community mourns 15-year-old fatally hit by a truck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The East Village community gathered over the weekend to mourn the loss of a <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2026\/09\/19\/teenage-cyclist-killed-in-east-village-truck-crash--nypd-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">15-year-old girl who was killed<\/a>\u00a0after she was hit by a truck while riding a Citi Bike.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds gathered Saturday evening at the site of the crash, lighting candles, bringing flowers and holding each other tightly as they remembered Daria Serkov.<\/p>\n<p>Serkov played soccer and tennis. The teen had a twin sister and lived in Stuyvesant town.<\/p>\n<p>Many people were too emotional to speak, instead leaning on the community for support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 15, it\u2019s like, this is a lot for kids to process. It\u2019s a lot for anyone to process,\u201d said Christine Janssen, who organized the vigil. \u201cThese kids just need to be together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the NYPD, Serkov was riding on the back of a Citi bike Friday night that was being steered by a 16-year-old girl.<\/p>\n<p>The girls were traveling west on 14th Street along a portion of the street without a bike lane. They continued straight into the path of a turning truck, which had its turn signal on, and into the driver\u2019s blind spot.<\/p>\n<p>Serkov was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals\/Bellevue. The 16-year-old girl was in stable condition but severely injured.<\/p>\n<p>The truck was driven by a 58-year-old man who remained at the scene.
