Starting Monday, New York is sending out energy rebate checks of up to $200 as part of a previously announced initiative to help residents pay their utility bills amid higher living costs.<\/p>\n
There are no logistical hoops. <\/p>\n
A total of 8.2 million households across the state will receive checks. The mailing will last into December.<\/p>\n
Hochul says she is allocating the funds because of rising costs of heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. Soaring gas prices compound concerns. The energy rebate checks are part of the $1 billion budget allocated under the “Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate” (POWER) program, which provides families relief.<\/p>\n
\u201cToo many families are struggling with rising household energy bills and soaring gas prices at the pump \u2014 and that’s why we’re putting money directly back in New Yorkers’ pockets by sending energy rebate checks to millions of families as part of our affordability agenda,\u201d Hochul said Monday in a statement, in part. <\/p>\n

What is this one-time payment about? Who gets a check?<\/p>\n
The POWER program will provide $200 to joint filers with incomes under $150,000, and $150 to those with incomes between $150,000 and $300,000. Individual filers with incomes under $150,000 will receive $100.<\/p>\n
Refunds will be issued as advance credit checks.<\/p>\n
Who is eligible to receive a POWER check?<\/p>\n
An individual is eligible to receive a refund credit check if, for tax year 2024:<\/p>\n
You filed your New York State Resident Income Tax Return for tax year 2024 on time<\/p>\n
You were a full-time resident of New York State during tax year 2024<\/p>\n
You reported income that falls within the established eligibility thresholds<\/p>\n
You were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s tax return<\/p>\n
What do I need to do to get it?<\/p>\n
