For the second consecutive year, Manhattan High cross country made history at the prestigious multi-state Southern Stampede met in Joplin, Missouri on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The defending Class 6A champion girls won the team title for the second straight year, while senior Gabrielle Converse set a new school record in the individual race. Converse finished second overall in 17:58.43, breaking her own school record of 18:03.65 set at last year\u2019s Southern Stampede.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Zara Koehn also finished in the top 10, placing seventh in 18:42.12. Junior Lauren Perry was 21th in 19:26.32, senior Scarlett Williams finished 22nd in 19:26.74 and junior Andie Strathman was 28th in 19:38.76 to round out Manhattan\u2019s scoring five.<\/p>\n
The Indians totaled 76 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Cor Jesu Academy from St. Louis with 123. Other varsity runners included sophomore Isla Spreer who placed 39th in 20:03.28, and junior Ryan Vera in 43rd in 20:10.92 for Manhattan.<\/p>\n
The Indians\u2019 junior varsity girls also won their race, with four Manhattan runners earning medals.<\/p>\n
The Manhattan boys finished 10th with 237 points, tying Webster Groves, another St. Louis school, before winning the tiebreaker for 10th place. Sophomore Jaxon Wheeler led the Indians in 17th place in 16:19.20.<\/p>\n
Junior Kyler Grogg finished 41st in 16:50.37, senior Benjamin Huser was 60th in 17:12.53, freshman Brecken Fabrizius placed 62nd in 17:14.34 and sophomore Levi Gurgel finished 70th in 17:18.93.<\/p>\n
Rounding out varsity runners were junior Ethan Birkhead in 73rd at 17:22.99, while Eli Witt finished 89th in 17:40.89. The Manhattan boys also had two runners earn medals in the junior varsity race.<\/p>\n
