NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) – \u2060Brazilian \u2060President Luiz Inacio Lula \u2060da Silva met New York City Mayor Zohran \u200bMamdani on Monday for a first chat between two of the \u200cbiggest names of the \u200cpolitical left in the Americas ahead of key elections \u2060in both \u2060Brazil and the United States.<\/p>\n
Lula is in the US \u200bfor the United Nations General Assembly and received Mamdani in an Upper East Side house that serves as the residence and office of \u200bthe Brazilian representation to the UN.<\/p>\n
Lula said in a brief \u2060declaration \u2060to reporters after the \u2060meeting \u200bthat the two talked about problems that are common to both countries, \u200bparticularly the rising \u2060cost of living.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mamdani said he would take inspiration from the Brazilian, who had implemented social programs for the poor in Brazil, as he seeks to improve conditions for New Yorkers \u2060facing financial pressure for things like groceries and rent.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lula is running \u2060for a fourth non-consecutive mandate as Brazil’s president with the first round of the vote taking place on October 4. Most polls show him tied with right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of the former President Jair Bolsonaro and an ally of US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Mamdani has been a central figure in the Democratic Party \u2060in the US as the country heads to a key mid-term election in November that could change the Congress composition towards a larger representation for the Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n
