But according to newly unveiled redesign plans from Mayor Mamdani and the DOT, the city is creating a space that lives up to the street’s name.

This redevelopment of Park Avenue is a product of excellent timing. Beneath the street, Metro-North’s Grand Central Terminal train shed is undergoing a $1.7 billion rehabilitation to replace thousands of corroded steel beams. Since the MTA has to rip up the roadway anyway, city officials seized the opportunity to turn a massive construction mess into a pedestrian paradise.

Photograph: Courtesy NYC DOT/Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and PlannersPark Avenue redesign plans

“New Yorkers asked us to make more room for people to walk, bike and enjoy their city, and we listened,” said Mayor Mamdani. “This updated design puts more space where it belongs: in the hands of New Yorkers. By expanding our medians, adding greenery and seating and creating a dedicated protected bike connection, we are making Park Avenue safer and more beautiful for everyone who uses it.”

Photograph: Courtesy NYC DOT/Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and PlannersPark Avenue redesign plans

The updated plans—revised after public feedback—take away even more car space than originally proposed and add more space for pedestrians and bikers. According to the plans:

The avenue will drop from three lanes in each direction down to two northbound lanes and just one southbound lane.
One southbound traffic lane will be converted into a two-way protected bike lane, keeping cyclists separated from both car traffic and pedestrians.
Expanded center medians will feature expanded walking paths, lush landscaping, public seating, new crosswalks connecting block-to-block, and dedicated space for temporary public art and programming.
Parking lanes on both sides of the street will remain intact for local access and deliveries.

This means that you’ll soon be able to enjoy a pleasant stroll through a green Midtown oasis, rather than dodging taxis and drowning out the sounds of traffic.

The redevelopment of Park Avenue is moving forward, and new designs show that it’s going to be a…

[38
128,1739,9,24,2480,63,129,131,130,904
post-352946","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-the-bronx","tag-bronx","tag-categories-things-to-do","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-news-city-life","tag-nyc","tag-the-bronx","tag-the-bronx-headlines","tag-the-bronx-news","tag-things-to-do
["GET
